The Swetland Homestead, located
on Wyoming Avenue near the
Midway Shopping Center in the
borough of Wyoming, is now open to
the public until Labor Day. Hours of
visitation will be Thursday, friday,
until 4 p.m.
The Homestead is one of the two
oldest homes in the Wyoming
Valley. It was begun in 1797 by
Revolutionary War veteran, Luke
Swetland and remained in the Swet-
land Family until 1958 when Luke’s
great-great-granddaughter, Mrs.
Frank G. Darte, gave the house to
the Wyoming Historical and Geolog-
ical Society. Each of the five down-
stairs rooms in the Homestead is
furnished in a different period style.
As visitors move from the 18th
century settler’s cabin to the Viecto-
rian parlor, they are shown changes
in lifestyles and taste for a 60-yar
period.
The first portion of the home, a
cabin built by Luke Swetland, con-
tained two downstairs rooms and a
large loft above. Today, the cabin’s
original fireplace with its bake oven
and furnishings reminiscent of the
early period of settlement provide
visitors an introduction to the his-
tory of the home.
Moving through the house guests
view the dining room with its Fed-
eral period, furniture illustrating the
tastes and syles’of the early 19th
century. From the" dining room one
furnishings depicting the accepte
downstairs rooms® include a bed-
room and a parlor with appoint-
ments from the Victorian era of the
1860's.
The Wyoming Historical and Geo-
logical Society has maintained this
historic building as a community
educational resource for over 20
years. In addition to summer visita-
tion hours, the Homestead is open to
area elementary schools for class
tours in the spring and fall.
Admission to the home is $1.00 for
adults, $.50 for children 5-16, and no
charge for children under 5.
The Wyoming Historical and Geo-
logical Society is a non-profit com-
munity organizaiton dedicated to
preserving and interpreting the his-
tory of Luzerne County.
