cop the win,

CLIPBOARD NOTES: s
— Bob Mason of United Pegg
Bank informed me plans are ju
about finalized to bring former
U.S. Open Champ Andy North
another exhibition. Andy was a
big hit last year. "
Mason said he
has close to 100
golfers set to par-
ticipate in the
Bank’s outing
again this year.
While the
college and high
school football seasons are still
several months away, I’ve been
hearing a lot of good things about
two teams in particular. Many
coaches believe Valley West will
have another outstanding team
and should be the early favorite
for the local title. One of the
more improved teams will be
Tunkhannock thanks to Coach
Tom Oldziejewski’s superb off-
season weight program.
— While Pitt’s Bill Fralic is
regarded as one of the leading
candidates for the Heisman
Trophy, the Panthers are not
going to put on any extravagant
publicity campaign. They're
going to let Fralic’s capabilities
do the talking.
— The Amateur Wrestling
News will announce shortly that
Penn State enjoyed the top
recruiting class in the country.
“On paper it would appear we
had an outstanding year,” said
Coach Rich Lorenzo, Eastern
Wrestling League’s Coach of the
Year.” Based on ability, I'd have
to say the incoming class has the
most potential I've seen since
I've been associated with Penn
State wrestling.”
The Eastern Wrestling
League will be taking 27 wres-
tlers to the NCAA Championships
in Oklahoma City next March.
The EWL was awarded four
additional ‘wild cards’ by the
NCAA Committee recently. The
winners and runners-up, and the
seven wild cards will be going to
the big wrestle off. The increase
is one of the biggest handed out
by the committee.
— Speaking of the EWL, the
1985 Tournament is scheduled for
Lock Haven University the last
week of February.
— According to several sources
if the New York Giants don’t
show a vast improvement on the
field this season Coach Bill Par-
cells is gone. There appears to be
a
lit of a power struggle between
Parcells and GM George Young.
The Giants’ sorry record last
year is attributed to the depar-
ture of former Coach Ray Per-
kins, now the boss at Alabama.
— One thing refreshing about
the USFL is to see many of the
loop’s young quarterbacks run
the option play. What gets me is
how the announcers, especially
the former NFL players, always
seem to be amazed when the
play is executed so well. Very
few pro defenses are geared to
stop the play.
— Irem Pro Barry Fies has his
video camera and is ready to
present a different type of golf
lesson plan. He'll tape all of the
lessons and give the tape to the
player for his own use when the
appear to be a new concept ge
locally.
— Lake-Lehman’s girls softball
team is rolling toward another
title. Jill Solinski is the best
pitcher in these parts. Some say
she is firing the ball around the
70 mph mark which is putting
some velocity on it.
Another top-notch athlete for
the Lady Knights is Ronda
Hudzik. She hopes to continue to
play roundball when she attends
collegeg next year. Coach Flossie
Finn continues to mold some
quality teams. Both will be a
plus to any athletic program.
