Soakdown’ Hotter
If you are one of the proud owners of a new turbocharged
automobile, or if you are thinking about owning one, you may have
to pay some expensive repair bills unless you use the right motor
oil. :
While some motorists may have a general idea of a turbochar-
ger’s function, many do not.
Norm Hudecki, an engineer for Valvoline Oil. Company of
Lexington, Ky., offers the following definition: “A turbocharger is a
device mounted to an engine that uses a turbine to compress air
before it is delivered to the intake system,” Hudecki said. ‘‘The
turbine is powered by gases produced in the car’s exhaust system.
This compressed air improves an engine’s power output, resulting in
higher horsepower when the car accelerates.”
Technical jargon aside, though, what a turbocharger basically
does ‘is boost the power of an engine. That is why they are
increasingly popular as optional equipment on new cars.
“In order to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)
standards, which require that cars produced in the 1984 model year
obtain 27 miles per gallon, while at the same time satisfying
demands of the buying public for performance, car manufacturers
have settled on the turbocharger as a solution to their dilemma,’
explained Bill Runkle, another Valvoline engineer.
While the turbocharged engine is the latest technological develop-
ment impacting the new car market (experts expect to sell some
350,000 turbocharged vehicles in 1984 up 1,500 percent from 1983), it
is important to realize that the technology does demand certain
precautions - in particular, strict lubrication requirements.
A turbocharger is powered using gases produced in the exhaust
system. These gases generate extremely high temperatures within
the turbocharger unit.
“During operation, under normal driving conditions during
average warm weather temperatures, the oil temperature inside a
turbocharger reaches around 230 degrees Fahrenheit,” Hudecki
said. ‘‘A non-turbocharged engine reaches a level of approximately
220 degrees.” Hudecki explained that neither of these temperature
levels is really considered harmful to a motor oil’s lubrication
ability.
However, the need for a special motor oil for a turbocharged
engine is caused by what happens when the engine is turned off, not
while it is running.
While an engine and turbocharger are operating, oil continuously
flows through the engine and turbocharger, lubricating moving
parts and carrying away heat. As soon as the engine is turned off,
though, the oil stops flowing through the turbocharger, whose
internal mechanism had been turning at thousands of rmps’s. In a
few minutes, ‘‘soak-down” temperatures can skyrocket to more
than 600 degrees Fahrenheit, more than triple the temperatures
normally experienced by regular motor oils.
According to Hudecki, the danger from the thermal stress of 600
degree ‘‘soakdown’’ temperatures is that the type of oil used may
not provide adequate protection. ‘If the oil in the turbocharger
system is not capable of maintaining its lubricating properties after
exposure to extremely high temperatures, oxidation and the
formation of carbon deposits is likely to occur. ‘Consequently,”
Hudecki explained, ‘“‘the bearings within the turbo unit may seize or
fail, causing expensive repairs or replacement of the turbocharger.”
To protect a turbocharger from damage caused by failure of
lubricants exposed to dangerous ‘“‘soakdown’’ temperatures, auto-
motive experts recommend an oil that is high in oxidation inhibitors
and detergents.
Valvoline Turbo V Motor Oil, one new product, is the only oil on
the U.S. market at this time which is specially formulated for
turbocharged passenger car engines and which has been tested on
the only turbocharger test stand in the world, according to Hudecki.
“A select additive package has been added to the oil that helps it
withstand the 600 degree turbocharger temperatures and fight
oxidation, while modern detergents help keep contaminating sludge
and deposits dispersed,” Hudecki said.
Additionally, most auto manufacturers recommend that the oil in
a turbocharged engine be changed more frequently than in regular
engines. While most manufacturers recommend an oil change every
7,500 miles in non-turbocharger engines, they recommend that oil in
a turbocharged engine be changed at reduced mileage because of
the thermal stress to which the oil is exposed.
Turbochargers will continually increase in popularity,” predicts
Hudecki. ‘Motorists can enjoy the benefits of long, trouble-free and
low-cost operation of their turbochargers as long as they remember
it requires a special motor oil. :

Auto makers seeking to extend the
shiny appearance of cars rolling off
Detroit production lines are beginning to
use alternate paint systems that impart a
longer lasting high-gloss look.
One of the newest processes being
offered to new, car buyers is a two-coat
finish that is cosmetically superior to the
traditional one-coat paints. Referred to
as the ‘‘color coat-clear coat” system, it
consists of a base coat of pigmented paint
over which clear coat is applied to
provide a deeper, more lustrous finish.
The result is an eye-catching sheen
which greatly enhances the car’s overall
appearance. However, the new system
presents some potential pitfalls for car
owners who are in the habit of protecting
their vehicles with a coat of wax only
when they see the finish begin to lose its
gleaming appearance.
With the color coat-clear coat system,
the usual indicators for deciding when to
wax no longer apply. The finish does not
dull slowly over time. Instead, it remains
bright and shiny for an extended period
even though inclement weather, road
film and other hazards may attack the
finish. The new system is also susceptible
to deterioration from sunlight which can
cause the outer clear coat layer to
discolor and break down before it’s time.
To capitalize on the beauty of the clear
coat effect and give these finishes the
protection they need, car care experts
recommend the same kind of regular
waxing schedule used on more conven-
tional finishes. Waxing provides cars
with a protective overcoat that shields
the clear coat surface from harsh envi-
ronmental conditions including exposure
to ultra-violet radiation from the sun.
Waxes containing a UV light absorbing
agent have been developed to help fight
the damaging effects of the sun’s rays on
these color coat-clear coat systems. Their
UV-absorbing capability is particularly
important for cars maintained in
warmer, sunnier climates, such as the
Southern U.S., where the sun is a con-
stant threat to the autobody surface.
Waxing the new finsih regularly is also
prescribed fo inhibit road and atmos-
pheric particles from scratching the
outer clear coat. ”
When to Wax
Existing studies indicate that establish-
ing a regular waxing schedule for a car
is the best method to ensure its finish is
protected from environmental elements.
Generally, a regular schedule consists of
waxing the vehicle once every two to
three months.
Getting into the habit of on-going car
care becomes even more desireable when
one considers that consumers generally
pay a premium for the optional color
coat-clear coat paint application. If an
owner allows the outer layer to wear
away, the car will require a totally new
finish job at a considerable cost. The
clear coat cannot be restored without
refinishing the entire car.
Overseas Origins
The introduction of the color coat-clear
coat finishes began with cars from both
Europe and Japan. Shortly after its
introduction, U.S. auto manufacturers
adopted the process to position domestic
cars as competitive with their foreign
counterparts.
Currently offered to add a superior look
to ‘metallic paints, the color coat-clear
coat process will also be available in non-
metallic versions as well.
Now that Detroit has decided to enter
the new paint system marketplace, it’s
apparent that the new finishes are here
to stay. In fact, their use on newer cars
may cause us to redefine the way we look
at automotive finishes. But remember
that proper care and treatment is
required to help protect your investment
and to continue drawing admiring glan-
ces from passersby.
The job of the carburetor air filter is to
clean the enormous amounts of air used by
the engine. It must filter out foreign
matter which might otherwise get into the
engine and cause wear.
Most late model cars and light trucks
use the replaceable dry paper filter ele-
ments.
Remove the fastener (wing nut, bolt, or
clamp) located on the top of the air
cleaner assembly.
Remove the cover and pull the filter out.

To clean, hold the filter by the rim and tap
it several times on a firm surface.
To determine if the filter needs to be
replaced, hold it so light from a flashlight
shows through from the inside outwards.
Turn the filter or move the flashlight to
shine light through each section of the
filter. If light does not pass through the
filter, it must be replaced. Replace the
filter in the air cleaner and reinstall the
cover and fasteners.
