1 2 mation. With the opening day of trout now history, a lot of Pennsylvania anglers are left with memories of some . pretty fine fishing. After all, that is what opening day is all about. But, now it’s time for Keystone State anglers to really get serious. According to the Pennsylvania Fish Commission the great ‘white fleet of hatchery * trucks is rolling again and by June, nearly 3 million more trout will be planted in 645 streams and 93 lakes throughout the Com- monwealth. And ‘anglers in the know realize that many of the over 2 million trout that were stocked pre- season still remain to be caught. And while opening day angling reports were excellent state- wide, water tempera- tures are the key to good angling. Trout feed most actively in slightly colder water (55-58 degrees) than their cousins, the brown and rainbow (58- 62 degrees). As the season progresses and water temperatures inch their way into the mid-fifties, trout fishing action will actually pick up and when the water semperatures move into the low and mid-sixties, trout fish- ing is at its peak. Later in the summer, when water temperatures climb into the seven- ties, feeding activities slow down as trout move into cooler waters. Most good anglers temperature is at opti- mum regardless of what time of day that might be. In April, opti- mum temperature is usually found around mid-afternoon. Later in the season it generally occurs in the morning and again late in the evening.
