(Go camping In much of the U.S., there’s a definite feeling that inter is in retreat. The sun is warming the earth and n places the: buds are already on the trees. Try to teal away for a long weekend of camping to get the amily used to camping out before the long spring racation rolls around. If you get the kids hooked on ishing and outdoor living, they’ll be eager to return or longer stays. By now, spring is officially here. It’s efinitely a time to get back in touch with nature. If you like fast water, this is the time of year to rganize a canoe camping trip. You can cartop your anoe to your destination or rent a canoe at any of undreds of canoe liveries throughout the country. emember that no matter how warm the air gets on a unny afternoon of canoeing, the water is still danger- usly cold at this time of year. Under these conditions, xperienced canoeists wear wet suits for safety. and easoned canoeists always wear their PFD’s. Whether you're a canoeist, fisherman or hiker, owll need a sound warm night’s sleep at the end of an active outdoor day. Each person needs a high quality sleeping bag suitable for the temperature. But no matter how good your sleeping bag is, don’t plan to place it directly on the damp ground or directly on your tent floor. You don’t want to get that close to nature. The ground is covered with roots and stones and plants that don’t add up to a bed of roses. The lumps and bumps will feel lumpier and bumpier as the night goes on. Take along an air mattress and a small lightweight pump. Air mattresses are easy to pack and are available in single and double sizes. The trick to comfortable sleeping is not to blow your air mattress up too far. If you blow it up only as far as necessary to keep your weight off the ground, you'll sink into the mattress and feel it wrap around you. Sleeping outdoors at night, spending long days in the open air engaged in a favorite sport - the joys and benefits of camping derive from the fact that camping is different in every way from the predictable life most of us lead. Get away from your regimented life; go camping on every occasion when you can get away from ‘“‘real life.” If you need information on where to camp, write Winnebago, Dept. L.W., P.O. Box 152, Forest City, Towa 50436. Tell them what states you're considering visiting and they’ll send you, free, the names and addresses of tourist associations and departments of natural resources in those states. Then you can send for piles of free information to help you plan the longer camping trip you may want to take next month. The American Heart Association, Northeastern Pa. The following tips for catching early-season trout are offered by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission: 1. Many sections of streams are fished mainly from one bank. If you can safely cross over and fish from the other side, the presentation of your offering will be new and more tempting to the fish. 2. When trout won’t hit your spinner, minnow, or wet flies, twitch the offering just as it makes the turn to come back across stream - then hang on. 3. To increase hooking quality, sharpen the point of each hook. Commercial sharpeners made for hooks are available at most tackle shops. 4, Don’t get discouraged! To increase your catch, cover the water well with your offering. Cast into every run and pocket. You may be surprised where the trout come from. : 5. If you don’t feel the bait bump- ing the stream bottom or if you don’t occasionally get hung up, add split shot. You probably aren’t fish- ing deep enough. 6. Cast minnows, works, and salmon eggs upstream and keep a tight line by reeling in as you follow the offering with the rod tip. The natural drift allows the bait to appear normal, and the tight line lets you set the hook on the lightest strike.
