\ By CHARLOT M. DEMMON Staff Correspondent Dallas baseball coach Jack Wol- ensky has 30 candidates trying out for this season’s team but, by open- ing date, the number will probably be cut to 25 members, varsity and jayvees. “Despite the inclement weather, we have had a good off-season program that has helped give us a start on most teams,” said Wolen- sky. “I have good assistants and one of them, Trent Grove, who - played professional ball for three years, has helped the infield which should improve our defense.” Wolensky has six seniors return- ing this season, Tim Grove, left field; Art Coolbaugh, third base; Darren Breining, catcher; Paul Lewis, outfielders; fourth year starter Dave Thomas, shortstop; and Rich Gdovin, pitcher. Underclassmen returning, who will see action are Drew Jubis, cather; John Dent, pitcher; Chris Michael, pitcher, first base; A. J. Bittner, second base; Matt Medura, Mike Janosik, outfielders; Brian Moye, third base; Darren Ford, or second base; and Mike Hoffman, pitcher. The Mountaineers lost two of their star pitchers, Jim Lord and Steve Thomas, as well as Steve Federici and Jerry Rollman. “We should have a powerful hit- ting group again this year and a strong infield,” said Wolensky. “We have Dave Thomas, our infield anchor, Art Coolbaugh and A. J. Bittner. Darren Breining is one of the better catchers in the area and he is a leader. : “Tim Grove was one of the top three hitters in the league last year and will be strong again this season. We are one of the stronger hitting teams in the league, but we have a - young pitching staff. If some of these produce we can make the playoffs.” ; Wolensky said he has a good bunch of boys and he is optimistic about the season. There are four playoff spots in the league and the Mountaineers will be- battling for one of these. Dallas opens its season April 6 with Coughlin, one of the strongest teams in the league, a game Wolen- sky believes will give him a good indication of what the team will do. He doesn’t foresee a runaway on the part of any team since he believes most of them are well matched. LAKE-LEHMAN TRACK Lake-Lehman coaches and ath- letes are hoping for some warm, sunny days to get their spring sports program underway. “The weather has been against us today,” said Knight track coach Ed Narkiewicz. ‘We have had very little time to practice out-of-doors and have had only two scrimmages, so it’s too early to determine the potential of this season’s squad.” Narkiewicz has about 28 boys out for the squad, 15 of them returning from last season. One of these is Chris Van Gorder, District 2 champ last year in .the 110 high hurdles. Also back this season is Dave Jani- czek, District runnerup in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. “It looks as though we’ll have quality but not quantity,” said the track coach. Depth will be a major factor in our dual meets. We're a Division AA team and it looks like the division will be tight this season. Defending champion Bishop Hoban will have most of their squad back GAR.” Most of the girls out for track this season at Lake-Lehman are junior high students so it willbe a re- building year for the girls coach, Paul Reinert. The boys open the league season April 10 with Coughlin, weather permitting. The girls meet Coughlin girls April 9. LAKE-LEHMAN BASEBALL Knights’ varsity baseball coach Rodger Bearde has an unusually large number of candidates out for the team this season. He and his assistant, Dwight Barbacci, pres- ently have 37 on the. roster, whereas, usually about 24 or 25 come out for the team. FRIDAY, APRIL 6 W.V.W. at Lake Lehman ~ Nanticoke at W.S. Tech B. Junior Bill Bearde, who lettered season, will pitch and play in the infield. Junior P. J. O'Malley, who had two big wins last year over Dallas and Nanticoke, both strong contenders, will pitch for us this season. There is also a sophomore, Tom Stepanski, who can take the mound or play the outfield. Senior Chris Wargo is back for his fourth year as a starter in center- field and senior Scott Crispell, who started at shortstop for us last season, will probably play second and shortstop this season. T. Willie Cadwalder, junior, is one of the top catchers in the league, according to Bearde. He has a strong arm and has potential as a powerful hitter. Earl Weidner, second baseman last yeard and also a power hitter, will play third or shortstop this season. Billy Boyle will be in the outfield again this season. Other key players from last season are Juniors Dave Traver, Ryan Traver, Fred Gunn, Steve Long, and Dave Martin; Sopho- mores Jeff Martin, catcher and infield and outfielder Billy George. “We have some good key people and our pitching should be good but we have to work at our hitting and our overall defense,’’ said Bearde The team will play each team in the league once and the one with the champion rather than two division champs. The Knights are scheduled to open with Valley West, April 6, at home. “There are a lot of good teams in the league this year,” said Bearde. “Valley West, Dallas, Wyoming Area, Coughlin are strong teams. Hazleton is in the league this year and they're the unknown factor. It should be an interesting season.” LAKE-LEHMAN SOFTBALL Lake-Lehman softball coach Flor- ence Finn has all of last season’s starters returning this year. “We have a great group of ath- letes and should go far,” said Coach Finn. I have a good group and my starters play well as a team.” Jill Solinski will be back to pitch with Beth Finn backing her up on the mound. Gail Austin, the catcher from last season, will be out for a while, however, due to a basketball injury, but Ronda Hudzik will play in that postion. The Lehman girls have more than good pitching, according to Finn. They have strong players at just about every position and have great natural ability. Finn has Sandy Dicton, junior at first base, Sue Bonsavage, senior at second, Kim Fey, senior at short- stop, and Kelly Wandel, sophomore, at third. In the outfield, Pam Solin- ski will play right field, Cindy Slocum, center, and left field will be up for grabs between Lori Lopasky, Christi Yascellis and Gail Austin when she returns. The Lady Knights have some strong hitters in Kim Fey, over .500 last year and top base stealer; Ronda Hudzik, Sue Bonsavage and jill Solinski. : Finn is also expecting some great hitting from Kelly Wandel, an all- round athlete, and freshman Lori Pantle, a good hitter and smart player. She has a good pinch hitter in sophomore Kelly Siglin and an excellent hitter and outfielder in Cindy Slocum. Cindy’s sister, Susie, is quick on the bases. | “Under-estimated is Pam Solin- ski,” said Finn. “She is an excellent player. Pam has the best hands of any athlete I have seen and she is very aggressive.” The Lady Knights open April 6 against Wyoming Valley West, a tough team. Their second game is with Crestwood, whom Finn also described as tough. ‘‘Nanticoke is always strong,” said Finn. “And you never know what the outcome will be when we play Dallas.
