To York Catholic
District 2 title of which they can be
mighty proud. Head coach Joe
Martini looks like a very proud and
content man in the top left photo as
he speaks to his team during a
timeout in last week’s- game.
The Lake-Lehman girls’
basketball team fought even longer
than usual last Wednesday night,
butcameup on the short end of a 35-
34 overtime score in PIAA ClassAA
basketball playoffs at North
Schuylkill High School. The Lady
Knights were defeated by the girls
from York Catholic High School.
The Lehman girls enjoyed a 31-23
lead halfway through the final
period, but watched that lead
disappear via a full-court press
JoAnne Stephens tied the game at
34-all with two free throws with a
little over one minute showing on
the clock. Both teams missed field
goals attempts during the final
minute, sending the game in a
three-minute overtime period.
With more than a minute
remaining in the overtime. period,
the York Catholic team rebounded
a Lake-Lehman missed shot and
York's Ronnie Holland was fouled
. when attempting a lay-up shot.
Holland, who made the first shot
from the free-throw stripe but
missed the second, was the only
player to score during the extra
period. Her successful free throw,
however, was just enough to give
York the victory and the op
portunity to advance toward the
1984 state title.
The Lady Knights, who did not
have one player in double figures,
scored only 10 of 20 foul shots
during the game.

I was appalled at the recent
decision by certain members of the
Dallas School Board to terminate
Coach Ron Rybak from the football
post.
It’s obvious a.coach’s longevity is
becoming contingent upon the
stability of the school board.
The reason for Coach Rybak
getting the boot is strictly un-
professional.
What qualifications concerning
the football program do these self-
proclaimed experts have?
Their decision is an insult to the
integrity of the tax payers in the
Dallas District.
It’s hard to imagine the Dallas
football team doing any better in
the win and loss column than they
have in recent years.
the players, because from the
games I've seen, win or lose, they
performed to the best of their
ability.
Coach Rybak always had the
concern of his players first and
foremost. He was energetic,
organized and aggressive.
What assistance did the school
board give Coach Rybak during his
tenure? Did they try to hire for him
competent assistants? Did they
ksend him t oa couple of clinics each
year so he could keep abreast with
the new techniques and trends?
It's obvious to me the board
hasn’t accepted the realization that
perhaps the Dallas athletes aren’t
talented enough to whip the better
teams? There's always a short-
sightedness on the part of some
Back Mountain fans concerning
any teams’ overall ability and
limitations. Dalls did defeat GAR
and Meyrs for the first time in a
long spell. To me, that’s progress.
Hasn’t Dallas, under Rybak’s
direction, held the upper hand over
its chief rival, Lake-Lehman?
The Dallas football team plays in
the Wyoming Valley Conference.
It’s a high school loop and not the
NFL, folks. We're dealing with.
teenagers and not professionals as
the board would have you believe.
In discussing Rybak’s dismissal
with coaches from around the WVC,:
his players. In fact, to a man, all of
the coaches I talked with em-
phasized Rybak always had his
team well prepared and they
always got after people which to me
is the bottom line in schoolboy
football.
Before the Dallas Board, which
has never been ranked with the
more competent ones in this area,
convenes for its next escapade,
they should do some soul-searching
and ask--did we do everything
possible to make the football
program om a par with the otehrs in
the WVC? My appraisal is NO!
CLIPBCARD NOTES:
Lake-Lehman’s girls’ roundball
team came up a point short on its
runat State title, but they turned in
a remarkable effort all seasong
long. Coach Joe Martini has a solid
program going and he'll have them
back in the chase next season.
Anytime you lose by a single point
it’stough toaccept,and I don’t care
if your playing tiddly-winks. The
overall skills of womens’ sports has
improved beyond anything anyone
xouls imagine 10 years ago.
Especially in ball handling and
outside shooting.
Meanwhile, over at Dallas there
was also disappointment when the
boys team bowed to Central York.
Coach Clarence Ozgo’s team
simply didn’t have the height inside
to thwart the board strength of the
victors. I gotta believe the Mounts
with a 24-10 record performed much
better than anyone believed they
could back in November.
Ozgo has demonstrated when the
talentis on hand, he’ll get the most
out of it. It was a tremendous
season. .
How tough was the competition in
the recent Pennsylvania Staté
Wrestling Championships?
Penn State Coach Rich Lorenzo
told me last week it’s one of the
more outstanding groups he’s seen.
“I can’t recall when I’ve seen so
yoru area (Wyoming Valley)
wrestled very hard and simply
came up short. There's a very fine
line between the winners and the
fifth place finishers. Overall, I'd
rank the tournament as one of the
best I’ve seen in sometime. I'm
hoping we get our share,” said the
Eastern Wrestling League's Coach
of the Year.
Lake-Lehman’s Wayne Rosen
crans and Dallas’ Craig Rome per-
formed admirably in capturing
fifth places. Both enjoyed superb
campaigns and carried the Back
Mountain banner quite well. )
Coaches Ed Ladamus and Larry
Schuler did a fine job in preparing
their teams and the individual
wrestlers for the post-season
tournaments.
Considering the caliber of
competition, fifth place isn’t
nothing to sluff-off.
For you wrestling buffs, the
Russian Olympic Team will be
competing against some of the top
USA wrestlers om Sunday, April 8 at
Penn State’s Rec hall. The action is
slated to start at 1 p.m.
USA Coach Dan Gable will have
some of the top Eastern wrestlers
to goagainst the Russians. It should
be a good show.
Not to be redundant, but, I still
believe the USA roundballers will
win the Olympic gold medal. Heck,
from what I' ve seen from the NCAA
tourney, we’ve got so much speed
and shootting ability, the Russians
are going to have their handsfull.
However, you never know what
kind of officiating we’ll encounter.
We could get some rinky-dink from
some banana country and whistle
our guys to a standstill, too.
Speaking of the Olympic squad,
I've gotta hunch there will be the
usual controversy over the selec-
tion of the final team.
Knowing how Coach Bob Knight
prepares a team, rest assured we'll
be the bestin that aspect going into
the games.
I see a vast improvement from
week to week in the caliber of play
in the USFL. Obviously the most
significant upgrade is at quar-
lerback and in the familiarity with
their personnnel.
It was interesting to read in the
Philly papers last week where some
of the grid buffs believe the Stars
are comparable to the Eagles.
Heck, I felt last season the Stars
were a couple of players shy of
being on a par with the Birds. The
Birds have too many ordinary
players and some that have
reached their peak. On the other
hand, the Stars are young and have
some very talented folks.
Former Coughlin star Ron Solt,
an outstanding guard for the
Maryland Terps, should be drafted
in the first 50 players selected in the
upcoming NFL draft. From what
I've heard and read, his stock keeps
going up.
The Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf
Course finally got an outstanding
greenskeeper in Wally Zimich. He’s
got over 30 years of experience and
has a fist full of credentials.
Sorry to see John Zimich
relinquish his seat on the board of
the W-B Muni. I assure it was the
only way they’d consider his
brother for the position. John
played a major role on the Muni
board for a long time. His expertise
will be missed.
The collegiate wrestling world
hummed last week when Edinboro
University announced it was going
the full route with its program. The
Scots hired former Iowa All-
American, Mike DeAnna as its
head coach.
DeAnna was recruiting coor-
dinator for the Hawkeyes. He'll
have 11 full rides to work with. The
Scots want to compete on the
Division 1 level andl with the type of
commitment they're making it
shouldn’t take long.

The Dallas boys basketball team
was defeated by Central York, 74-
59, last Tuesday, squashing its
hopes of winning a state cage title
this year, but the Mountaimeers of
Coach Clarence Ozgo have nothing
to be ashamed of.
With a 24-10 record and a District
2 title in its possession, the Dallas
team was the pride of the Back
Mountain during this year’s boys’
cage season.
* The Mountaineers took a 16-14
leadat the end of the opening period
in last week’s game played in
Sunbury but were outscored, 20-9 in
the second period and found
themselves on the short end of a 34-
25 halftime margin.
Dallas moved within three points,
cutting the lead to 37-34 with just
over four minutes remaining in the 1
third period but the Panthers
widened the margin to seven with
justt one quarter remaining.
