J Your home was robbed
Ws winter and you may
not be aware of it. If you
have old windows, they
may be stealing up to 40
percent of your heat by al-
lowing it to seep outside of °
your home. You can arrest
this energy thief by install-
ing aluminum replacement
windows.
Energy moves through a
window in one of two
ways: conduction (heat or
cold travels through solid
objects such as a pane of
glass) and infiltration (air
leaks through the cracks).
Two panes of glass have a
higher resistance to con-
duction because they trap a
layer of air between them
which acts as a very good
insulation. Further, con-
such as the sash, main
frame, and between storm
and prime windows.
There are several ways
to tell if your windows are
allowing costly heat to es-
cape. Open your double
hung window part way and
side to side. If it is loose, it
cold or windy day take a
fluffy feather, a strip of
tissue or a lighted candle
and move it around the
edge of the window frame.

appears to be the new mode in dress,
furnishings, cuisine, and especially
behavior.
Thisis the belief of Lee Mills, director of
design for Naugahyde brand fabric. Mills,
has seen his own Naugahyde evolve from
Winston Churchill-era men’s club leather-
looks to the sporty, more casual canvas
and sailcloth fashions of today.
‘“‘Americans ar running harder and
losing weight,”’ Mills said. ‘The trend
today is away from anything heavy.
“Look how our eating habits have
changed. We're eating less meat. We
began to take our protein from quiche.
Whenwetired of quiche, we went to pasta.
Now, high fashion in cuisine is raw fish,
sashimi. It’s lighter, still.”
In color preferences, Mills notes, high
fashion now favors subtle pastels, like pale
salmon and blanched peach. Not long ago,

the heavier jewel tones were in. 20
In the home, the trend to lightness is
evidenced in more open space with fur-
niture in wicker and glass and steel
constructions that produce an airy
silhouette.
Lighter colors, of course, are
everywhere. Even in the city with its dirt
and grime, large expanses of parchment
white and ivory are practical because of =
fibers and finishes that fight dirt.
Naugahyde has a wear surface that resists
soil and staining. Oily dirt and spills, in-
cluding red wine, wipe away with a damp
cloth.
“As the ads tell us, lightness is less
filling,”” Mills said. ‘In its pure, minimal
state, we could we could call it sashimi
decoratingbecause it gives us the protein -
the function - with all the frills stripped
away.”

Alcoholics
Disease
When alcoholics are confronted
about the problems their drinking is
causing, they will typically deny
this, instead of blaming anyone and
anything else for the drinking. Does
this mean that all alcoholics are
chronic liars? Not at all, says a
state Health Department expert.
According to Carol Williams,
director of the Bureau of Program
Services, denial is one of the key
symptoms of alcoholism.
“Many alcoholics will say that
only drink beer, or because they
only drink on weekends, or because
they never drink in the morning.
These are all myths - the fact is that
what, when, orhow much a person
)drinks has nothing to do with
whether or not that person is an
~, alcoholic.
“Another myth is that some
“' people are too old or too young to be
alcoholic. Actually, the truth is
almost just the opposite. Although it
usually requires a good bit of time -
several years or more - for a person
to develop a serious drinking prob-
lem, this does not hold true for
people under the age of 21. In fact,
there were over 3,000 teenaged
admissions to treatment for alcohol-
ism in Pennsylvania during a recent
12 month period,” she said.
Williams added that denial will
typically involve other family mem-
bers or close friends, as well.
