DENMON Staff Correspondent With less than two minutes remaining in .the contest, junior guard Mark Farrell hit a six-foot jump shot to give the Dallas Moun- taineers a 41-39 victory over Bishop Hoban last Thursday to win the District 2 Class AAA basketball title. “It had to be the greatest win in the history of Dallas High School,” said Dallas coach Clarence 0zgo. ‘‘We never won a district title before and it’s moreamazing that we did it by defeating teams like Nanticoke and Bishop Hoban, two powerful teams.” Ozgo said when the season started he believed his team was pretty good, but there were several ‘ifs’. “Our coaching staff believed if some of our boys came through we said. “We counted on Dave Thomas time and we knew he would come through. “One of our biggest “ifs” was Ed Gorey. Last season he was up and down. If he was consistent this year, we knew we had a big plus. Ed did what we wanted him to do. He played consistently all year and helped win a lot of our games. “Our two jayvee guards, Steve Wilson and Mark Farrell, came on the team and did a fabulous job for us. They ran the club, both on offense and defense. Their actions on and off the court spoke for them. season. He has done a terrific job rebounding and on defense. Without him, we wouldn’t be where we are.” After winning the first half divi- sion title, Dallas lost the second half Greg gets two Greg Manusky leaps high for two of his four points in Dallas’ District 2 victory last Thursday. We had faith in our play and felt that we could beat th Trojans. “We stuck to our style and the kids were selective in their playing and it paid off. We did the same thing with Bishop Hoban. It was a close game all the way and Far- rell’s shot at the buzzer gave us the win.” Inter-districts begin March 16 with Dallas meeting Gettysburg, District Three’s No. Six team at a place to be decided. Ozgo is hoping the first round will be somewhere in the local area since his Mountai- neers are No. One in this district. “Now the going gets tougher,” said the Mountaineer coach. “There are some excellent caliber teams in the playoffs. We will have to win five games to take a state title. One loss and you're done. With the exception of a few adjustments we will continue with the same style play that got us this far. “I’m happy for the boys because they have worked hard and the key to their success is that they have stuck together,” he continued. “I'd like to see them keep going, but whatever they do they can be proud for they have done what no cage team before them did — brought home the District 2 AAA (Division I)ititle.” Looking ahead to next year, 0zgo said he will lose three starters® through graduation - Thomas, Gorey and Manusky. Farrell, Wilson and the others will be back so there will be a nucleus with which to get started.
