Defeat
Prep, 47-39
By CHARLOT M. DENMON
Staff Correspondent
“Tonight was fantastic,” said
Lake-Lehman’s girls varsity coach
Joe Martini, following the Lady
Knights’ 47-39 win over Scranton
Prep. The victory last Friday night
gave the Back Mountain girls the
Division AA PIAA District 2 title.
“The girls played like they've
neer played before,” said Martini.
“When we were behind and they
went to man-to-man defense and we
went to zone it turned everything
around. Our girls made a 12-point
run to gain the lead. The Solinski
sisters played an outstanding game,
Pam the best I have ever seen her
play. Ronda Hudzik - I don’t know
how she did it - she was so high, she
was sick.
“I had to take her out of the game
for a while and when she went back
in, she was injured but she played a
great game. It was her key shooting
when she came back in in the final
that clinched it for us.”
Martini said when the season
opened, the team and its coaches
set two goals for this year - the first
was to win the Wyoming Valley
Conference Division AA title and the
second was to win the District 2
title.
“We have achieved both. From
now on, each win will be icing on
the cake,” said the Knights’ coach.
“To win the state title, we have to
win five games. I’m making no
predictions. We’ll just take one
game at a time and from now on the
games become increasingly
tougher.
“Whatever we do, we will have
nothing to be sorry about because
the girls have been fantastic this
season. They are excellent athletes
but this year they have ‘‘jelled”
together. They have gained a cer-
tain maturity and they play their
roles better.
“Lori Lopasky can fill any spot,
inside or outside. In the Williams-
port game, I had my eyes opened.
Until then, I had been playing my
five starters most of the time,
letting the others on the bench.
When I had a girl out due to illness,
I had to change to seven instead of
my original five.
“We lost Gail Austin in January
so we down to six girls. Pam
Solinski filled in beautifully. She
showed it Friday night.”
Martini explained that his girls
know their particular jobs, but they
have learned to play as a unit. They
help each other more this season, he
said, and Martini believes this is a
key factor in their success.
He speaks highly of the Solinksi
sisters who let their actions on the
court speak for themselves. Martini
said Jill played the best game of her
career Friday night and he praised
Hudzik highly.
“She (Hudzik) went into the game
with an injured finger, ankle and
elbow and was so hyper about the
game that she became ill. I had to
take her out and ‘Thank goodness
for Charlotte Slocum’, who treated
her and brought her down. She
calmed Hudzik So she could go back
in the game in the third quarter.
Then she went after a jump ball and
fell on the floor.
“I had to take her (Hudzik) out
again and Mrs. Slocum treated. her
and got her straightened out. While
Hudzik was out, I put in Lopasky
who did a great job of rebounding.” |
When Hudzik went back in the
game, she made four consecutive
key foul shots for the Knights, the
shots that clinched the game for the
title winners.
The Lady Knights will play
Athens, District 4’s No. Two team,
on Saturday, March 17. Martini said
that although a definite site has not
been set, he believes it will be
Top honors
somewhere in the Wilkes-Barre-
Scranton Area since Lake-Lehman
is a No. One team.
If the Knights win that game, they
will play the No. 2 team from
District Trhee at a place to be
announced by committee officials.
“We will use basically the same
style play which carried us to the

Two College Misericordia men’s
basketball players were recently
chosen as members of the Keystone
Athletic Conference (K.A.C.) All
Tournament and All Conference
teams.
Michael Moeller and Monte Deyo
were ranked among the top six
tournament players and the five
best conference players. Selection
for the All Conference team is based
on a player’s performance during
the eight regular season games.
During Moeller’s four years on
the Highlanders basketball team, he
scored 1558 points against opposing
teams, averaging 24 points per
game and 69 percent from the foul
line. He served as this season’s
team captain and commanded a
forward position.
Moeller scored 13 points against
Penn State Capital Campus and 24
points against Alvernia during the
K.A.C. tournament held in Febru-
ary. The Highlanders placed second
in the conference.
A senior business major, Moeller
is the son of Paula and Arnie
Moeller of Nazareth.
Monte Deyo, an aggressive
rebounder, commands a center posi-
tion on the Highlanders team. He is
a three year veteran of the team
and averages 18 points per game
with a 76 percent average from the
foul line. During the K.A.C. tourna-
ment, Deyo scored 14 points against
Penn State Capital and 12 points
against Alvernia.
Deyo is a junior business major
from Hackensack, New Jersey. He
is the son of Crawford and Lois
Deyo.
