City schools, you can keep your
Harry Hamiltons and Todd Moules
because now the Back Mountain can
boast an All-American football
player of its very own. Flag foot-
ball, that is!
Remember Tracey Turner, the
All-Star everything from Lake-
Lehman High School? Now Tracey
has added yet another sport to her
already lengthy list of athletic
expertise.
The University of Rhode Island
sophomore was recently namd an
All-American at the National Colle-
giate Intramural Flag Football
Championships in New Orleans.
Sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, the
event featured all teams which fin-
ished first or second in regional
competition. URI, behind the Lynn
Swan-like play of Turner, breezed
undefeated through the regionals
which were held in New York state.
For its efforts, the team received
$500 in prize money and the oppor-
tunity to compete in the national
tournament.
Tracey relates that at URI, intra-
murals are taken rather seriously.
For that reason, it is no surprise
that the university backed the girls
100 percent in their efforts to take
home a national title.
Rhode Island provided the team
with uniforms, advanced them
$1,000 for expenses and even fur-
nished a state wagon for the trip.
Budweiser later reimbursed URI
the $1,000.
* Following the conclusion of tour-
chose the All-American team.
Tracey and the other selected mem-
bers were presented with trophies to
commemorate the honor.
When asked to comment on her
selection, Turner quipped, “I knew I
should have played football at
Lehman.”
Turney may wish she had played
football at Lake-Lehman, but it is
softball that got her a full ride to
Rhode Island. Last year as a fresh-
man, she started in center field and
batted lead-off for the nationally-
ranked Wrams.
Tracey received post-season
honors for her accomplishments,
being named to the All-New Eng-
land team. This spring, Tracey will
further display her versatility as
she alternates her playing time
between the pitcher’s mound and
center field.
