(Photo by Feb. 6-11 BY JOAN KINGSBURY This week, Boy Scouts throughout our: area are cele- brating Boy Scout Week. Boy Scouting was founded in England in 1908 ‘by Lord Robert Baden- Powell, an English army officer. The first troops were organized in the United States in 1910. Boy Scouting is divided into various levels. Young boys ages 8 to 10 are Cub Scouts; boys 10 and 11 are Webelos. Boys 11 to 18 years of age are Boy Scouts. After the age of 14, older boys may join Explorer Scout programs which may be geared to career programs like medical or emergency care, computer science or law or to adventure activities. Boys living in the Back Mountain are members of the Penns Mountains Boy Scout Council, Mountain Pathfinder District IIL Boy Scouting helps boys to develop a variety of talents and interests. A Boy Scout can earn up to 120 merit badges ranging from aviation to zoology, according to Lee Williames, troop leader, Troop 622 of Gate of Heaven. To earn the presitigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest possible, a young man must display a great deal of dedication in working on projects involving leadership, organiza- tion, citizenship. Harveys Lake Boy Scout Troop 331 which meets at the Lake-Noxen Elementary School is currently receiving instruction for their first aid merit badge. The troop held a family in the community with large medical bills, participated in the Walk-a-thon, participated in Harveys Lakes and Tunkhannock Parades where they were awarded three trophies, white water rafted down the Lehigh River. Scoutmaster of Troop 155 is Lee Blansett. Troop assistants are John Thomas, Ray Phillips, Chet Koprowski. Committee Chairman is Ken Carey. Judy Gramley is secretary; Ailene Forster is treasurer. During the church service Davies was presented with a 55 years Boy Scout service award pin and a 55 year veterans lapel pin. Davies has been registered Boy Scouts continuously since 1929 when he was 12 years of age, ex- cluding 4% years during World War I military service. During his Scouting years, Davies has served as assistant Cub Master and Committee member for Pack 123 Forty Fort; assistant Scout Mastr Troop 281, Dallas, 4 years; Scout Master, Troop 281, 10 years. He has instructed at’three show and do’s, served as a Round Table Committee member for three years. Davies has assited at many camporees and cam- parounds. Currently he is coun- seling for seven merit badges. For the past six years he has been very active with the troop, summer camping, canoeing, hiking and visitng Washington, D.C. with the scouts. During his Boy Scout years Davies has earned the Silver Beaver Award, the Virgil Honor, the Order of the Arrow, the District Distinguished Service Award, the Silver Arrowhead and the Scouter’s Key. Davies retired as Captain in the Corps of Engineers after 41» years of active service and 22 years of reserve duty. Married to the former Irene Brace, Davies and his wife are parents of a son Bruce III, who is married and lives in Connecticut. They also have two grandsons. Following the presentation, a social honoring Davies was held at the church. Scoutmaster is Henry Steuben, assisted by Eugene Gingo and Barry Brown. McQuilken was the first cub- master. Pack 281 has served over 25 years to the Back Mountain area by bringing a good solid scouting background to two generations of boys. Many of whom have gone on to the highest rank of Eagle Scout, and hold prominent positions in and out of the area today. Pack 281 is proud to hold the position where son has followed father in scouting, and also where families join the pack with their sons, as scouting promotes keeping the family together. Pack 281 consists of four Cub Scout Dens, one Webelo Den and one Tiger Scout Group. Cub Scouts and Webelos meet weekly and Tiger Scouts meet monthly.
