They give
- so others
may live
“Give That Others May Live’, is
a simple message that appears on
the bulletin board in the lobby of the
Meadows Apartments in Dallas.
However, behind that simple mes-
sage is a year’s full of hard work
and satisfaction for Mrs. Sarah Wil-
liams and Mrs. Bernice Rhone.
Shortly before Christmas of 1982,
these two ladies initiated a project
to assist families in the Back Moun-
tain Area who are in dire need of
food because of prolonged unem-
with financial problems. Their solic-
itation was limited to the tenants of
the 120 apartments within the Mead-
ows and the first round-up of food
netted almost 400 cans of vegeta-
bles, fruits, meats and the like.
Buoyed by this response, Mrs.
Williams and Mrs. Rhone decided to
3 Ah the program on a monthly
asis. throughout 1983. During that
time, the project has expanded to
inletide ‘¢ash?donations in addition to
the foodstuffs.
The average monthly cash dona-
tion has been about $100 and, as
Mrs. Williams explained, ‘‘we’ve
been pleased that throughout the
year we have continued to have
about an 80 percent participation by
the tenants in the donation of both
food and money.”
The figures may not at first seem
staggering until one considers that
the vast majority of the Meadows’
tenants, who are elderly and or
handicapped, are on ‘very limited
fixed incomes themselves.
With the cash that is collected, the
ladies purchase food directly from
Daring’s Market which has gra-
ciously provided it at cost since the
start of the project.
All of the food collected is then
distributed through representatives
of the Dallas Kiwanis, the Gate of
Food prepared
season.
Heaven Church, and the Dallas
School District. #
Mrs. Rhone noted, ‘“We do not
accept any requests for food
directly from families but rather
worth through these three fine orga-
nizations who have been so coopera-
tive not only in selecting the needy
ones but also in seeing that the food
is properly distributed.”
Fortunately, the story of this
project does not have an end. Mrs.
Williams and Mrs. Rhone are con-
tinuing their work and have even
expanded it.
They explained, six already-
selected hardship families were
treated to the makings of a Christ-
mas dinner consisting of ham, pota-
toes, vegetables, eggs, fresh fruit
and even candy canes for the chil-
dren.
As Mrs. Williams concluded,
“We'll try to keep going as long as
the need is there.”
