If Christmas and winter bring to
mind spicy hot tea, pine cones and
warm quilts, you will enjoy visiting
‘“Joanne’s New Season Shop” on
Overbrook Avenue.
Joanne (Mrs. John Ennis) of
Spring Street, Dallas says the shop
that opened the day after Thanks-
giving represents to her ‘“‘a new
season in my life, working with my
hands, creating something beauti-
ful.”
There have been many other sea-
sons in Joanne’s life - she taught
English at College Misericordia,
was the first Dean of Women at
King’s College, married John who is
now Chairman of the English
Department at King’s and became a
mother.
The Ennis’ two active sons Erin
10, and Connor 5, are very much a
part of the present as is Joanne is
teaching in local schools and
churches of Parent Effectiveness
Training as well as teaching quilt-
ing and operating the new shop.
Hers is very obviously a busy life
which could be one reason Joanne
says, “I love quilting. It gives me
an opportunity to be quiet and yet
create something. When life gets
hectic, quilting helps me get a focus
and I like the idea that what I am
making will last longer than I do.”
Fortunately for those who have
taken the quilting classes in the past
and those who will do so in the
future, Joanne also recognizes the
social values in quilting. Her shop
has the gentle, bustling atmosphere
that you would imagine inspired old-
fashioned quilting bees where gen-
erations of patient women sat side
by side sewing.
A modern version of a quilting
bee was performed recently when
Joanne and 24 local women fash-
ioned block by block a quilt that
was requested as a gift to Dr. Leo
Buscaglia from the Luzerne County
Dental Society. The theme of the
magnificent quilt was various leaf
patterns in celebration of Dr. Bus-
caglia’s prize winning best seller
“Freddie, The Leaf.” It is reported
that both the beauty of the quilt and
the thought behind it brought tears
Rel ee
dresses-coats
to the noted philosopher’s eyes when
it was presented to him last week in
Scranton.
Joanne praises the current vogue
for the country look in decorating
and the interest it has spurred in
crafts. Her “New Seasons Shop’ is
a virtual treasure house of pine
cone baskets, cross stitched -chil-
drens’ poems, stenciled hoops,
grape vine wreaths, raffia dolls,
handwoven vests and countless
other goodies that bring back the
past.
They have all been fashioned by
Back Mountain residents who share
Joanne’s love of the functional and
the beautiful and are willing to
share it with all those looking for a
truly unique Christmas gift.
And when this holiday season is
past and we move into the New
Year, it seems a certainty that
many more people will be joining
Joanne’s new series of quilting
classes that start in January. There,
they will be able to create their own
heirlooms as they learn quilting that
traditional method of self-expres-
sion that endures.
