DENMON Staff Correspondent ‘ | Pittston Area Patriots, paced by their 6-5 center Joe Mickiewicz, trounced the Lake- Lehman Knights 72-54 in a pre-season exhibi- tion game last Friday evening, Mickiewicz was called for a technical foul prior to start of the game for dunking the ball. The Knights converted the foul and picked up a two-point godl to take a 3-0 lead, but the big center went on to score 29 points and pull down 14 rebounds to lead the Patriots’ victory. The Knights used triple coverage on Mick- iewicz, but were unable to stop him from putting the ball in the basket as the center scored 15 points in the first half to lead a 36- 23 Patriot halftime lead. In the third period, Mickiewicz scored 10 of Pittston’s first 12 points while the Knights scored ‘only’ 10-points in. the ‘entire period! Lake-Lehman rallied in the final quarter, outscoring the Patriots, 21-14, but were unable to overcome the 58-33 lead the Patriots held at the end of the third period. Bill -Bearde was high scorer for Lake- Lehman with 16 points, scoring seven of them Carbondale Area came to Dallas last Friday and went home with a 71-46 win over the Lady Mounts. The Crusaders closed down Cheryl Gavigan who scored only five points while Billman and Sheri Ciccarelli hit the nets for 10 points each for Dallas. In the consolation round Wednes- day night, the Mountaineers defeated Meyers 70-54. The Back Mountain girls were paced by Sheri Ciccarelli who tossed in 20 points, all of them from the floor, while Cheryl Gavigan added 16 points. Meyers jumped out to a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Mounts outscored the Mohawks, 19-7. — CHARLOT M. DENMON in the first quarter. He left the game with 2:11 remaining in the final period when he was called for his second technical foul. Tom Kukosky collected 12 points in the game. The loss dropped the Knights to 6-2. Last Tuesday night, the Knights defeated Montrose, 77-51, on the Back Mountain floor. Bearde dropped! in 22 points to set the pace for a win over the Meteors. Our tallest man is Ray Iwanowski, who is 6’2”’, so our strong point this season should be our experience. “Three of our boys are three-year lettermen and the other are two year lettermen so they have a great deal of experience. Bill Bearde, Paul Jones and Marty Onzik have played for three years. Tom Kukosky, Ray Iwanowski, Scott Drugotch and Doug Barbacci have played for two.” The Knights have a 13-game exhi- bition season and to date have played eight games for a 6-2 record. Still on their schedule are Bishop Hoban, Nanticoke, Abington Heights and the Crestwood tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Dec. 28 and 29 and before the season opens the Knights should have some excel- lent experience behind them since they played against strong AAA teams. . Bearde has 13 boys out for this season’s team including seniors Bill: Bearde, Doub Barbacci, Tom. Kukosky, Ray Iwanowski, Scott Drugotch, Paul Jones, Marty Onzik- and Bob Belcher; juniors Dave Jan-_ iczek, Bill Boyle and Earl Weidner; and sophomores Mark Stash and Paul Andes. : The first six players for the Knights will probably be Bearde, Kukosky, Drugotch, Onzik, Jones: and Iwanowski. The Knights will compete with teams in Section II of the Wyoming Valley League where Coach Bearde believes there will be a tight race with Dallas, G.A.R. and Hanover in strong contention for the section title. Lake-Lehman cagers open the regular season on Jan. 3 against Wyoming Seminary at the Blue Knights gym in Kingston. The Lake-Lehman girls basketball team staved off a fourth quarter rally by the Bishop O'Reilly Queens- women last Friday and grabbed a 37-35 victory to capture the Joseph Yozwiak Memorial Tournament at Bishop O’Reilly. Lake-Lehman girls moved into the final round of the tournament last Wednesday night by defeating Pitts- ton Area, 68-41. The Lady Knights led 30-23 at the half, but outscored the Patriots, 38- 18, in the second half to grab the victory and move into the champi- onship round. Kim Fey and Jill Solinski hit 16 points each and Fey put 14 points in from the floor and went two-for-two from the char- ity stripe. Solinski went four-for-six from the free line and netted 12 points from the floor. Hudzik had a perfect four-for-four from the line and put four shots through the nets from the field.
