Hospital
aids deaf
Mrs. Nancy Kline, R.N. Head
Nurse of Nesbitt Memorial Hospi-
tal’'s Emergency Room, announced
that the deaf and hearing impaired
population of the Wyoming Valley
will greatly benefit from a new
communication aide. The hospital
recently purchased and installed a
special TDD portable printer that
permits the deaf resident to speak
directly with the hospital’s emer-
gency room personnel 24 hours a
day.
The printer permits quick and
efficient communication in the
event of a personal emergency. The
caller, in this case the deaf individ-
ual, has the capacity of contacting
medical personnel via their home
telephone system. A mini-typewriter
at the caller's home and at the
emergency room permits typewrit-
ten messages to be sent in a matter
of seconds.
Any deaf or severely hearing
impaired resident may contact the
hospital’s emergency room by dial-
ing 283-2333.
In addition to the purchase of this
several workshops have been con-
ducted for hospital personnel
regarding proper communication
techniques concerning the deaf or
hearing impaired patient.
