TALKING
WITH BERWICK
COACH George
Curry last week,
he told me his
team did not per-
form up to its
normal level
offensively in the
North Pocono
title tilt. Bulldogs
won in a romp,
41-zip.
Said George, ‘“We’ve had a lot
better games on offense than North
Pocono. We won by a big score, but
our execution wasn’t as good as it
has been. Overall, we had a very
good football team with some excel-
lent athletes. One of the keys to our
success was our depth. We’d have
people come in and play to the level
of the starter. Our players wanted

an undefeated season and the East-
ern Conference title. We’ve been
pointing for it since we walked out
of Meyers Stadium a year ago.”
BERWICK QB BO ORLANDO
reminds me of Pitt’s Tom Flynn as
a defensive back. I know the Boston
College Coaches believe he could be
another doug Flutie as a QB.
“Bo is one of the quickest kids
I've ever coached,” Curry said. “He
could play five different positions. I
think he could even play tailback
because of his explosiveness ‘run-

MARYLAND COACH GIB
ROMAINE was here for the cham-
pionship tilt. Romaine had a nice
chat with fellow golfer Jim Bam-
rick. Gib and the Terps are headed
for the Citrus Bowl in Florida where
they’ll play Tennessee. : ;
“We’ll have our hands full with
the Vols,” said Romaine. ‘They
have great team speed and a very
solid running attack. What concerns
me is the way the Vols can explode.
We've got to try to keep them from
making the big play and hope our
offense can sustain some long scor-
ing drives and keep their offense off
the field.”

J.P. MECK, Coughlin’s football
coach, was to learn his fate last
Friday at a hearing with the W-B
school board athletic committee.
Meck told me last week that it
didn’t look very good for him to
return as head coach next year
despite three championships and an
outstanding record of 66-23-3.
While Meck was reluctant to men-
tion the politics involved, it’s no
secret the W-B board seems to be
determined to oust Meck over a
series of incidents on his handling of
the Crusader grid program. John
Joseph appears to be the likely
successor, but again maybe he
doesn’t have the political clout!

WE'RE GETTING INTO THE
BOWL SEASON and it’s my favorite
time of the football season. I've
asked Ned Hartman, ‘The Wizard of
Odds,’ to allow me to run his bowl
selections the way his computer
sees the games. Here’s the Wizards’
early predictions:
CITRUS BOWL - Tennessee over
Maryland, 25-24.
HALL OF FAME BOWL - West
Virginia over Kentucky, 26-19.
HOLIDAY BOWL BYU over
Missouri, 28-22.
SUN BOWL - SMU over Alabama,
26-24.
Here’s how I see the above
games: I like the Vols because of
their quickness and kicking game.
For the Vols to triumph they must
run their fullback on quick openers.
They must pressure Boomer into
hurrying his passes. Terps have
sophisticated passing game. Also,
can Vols solve Terps wide-tackle
six? Against Kentucky they had
problems. Vols, 31-27.

WEST VIRGINIA’S PLAYERS
weren't happy about going to this
bowl. What effect it will have men-
tally remains to be seen. WVU is a
cut above Wildcats, but will they
want victory as much? Mountai-
neers, 24-21, on a Woodside field
goal.

I KEEP READING AND HEAR-
ING how good BYU is throwing the
football. Missouri is tough to run
against but can the Tigers play the
pass? Only two teams BYU topped
with credentials was UCLA and Air
Force. Tigers in an upset, 21-20. .

SMU GOT THE SHAFT from
Sugar Bowl. The Ponnies can play
defense with the best of them, while
the Tide is only ordinary at best and
hasn’t played like an Alabama team
all season. :

Eileen Fehrer rolled 178 for Fash-
ion Vending but it wasn’t enough as
Grotto Pizza girls shut out the
vendor’s team in the Ladies Country
League. Gordon Insurance forged
ahead with three points over
Daring’s Market aided by P.
Gordon’s big 213 (537) and K. Sca-
vone’s 176. F. Allabaugh contributed
171 to help the cause. C. Mill scat-
tered pins for 180-190 (505) and C.
Smith tumbled them for 176 (489) to
lead G.H. Harris Associates to three
points from Castlettes. V. Patton
toppled pins for 176 for the losing
five.
In the Back Mountain Church
League, Orange A blanked Trucks-
ville B while Orange A took it all
from Carverton B. F. Cornell rolled
221 (596) and B. Cyphers walloped
wood for 246 (590) to lead in the win.
B. Monk hit the pins for 527 but it
was in vain as the Lutherans
dropped three points to Shavertown
B who were paced by C. Kazokas’
521. Trucksville C blanked Maple
Grove helped by B. Hospodar’s 537
and Dallas A picked up three from
Carverton A. East Dallas made it
three over Shavertown A with no
one able to find the strike zone.
K. Spencer’s 232 led his Maniacs
to three points over the Halfbreeds
in Bonomo’s Mixed League while
the Halfwits split 2-2 with the A
Team.
In Our Gang League, the Suds
Suckers walked away with 3
points from the Lucky Strikes aided
by L. Isaac’s 515. D. Eddy hit for
Lite way. It’s Dexter.

Sweet Valley Outfitters earned

Goods sparked by Gary Mazer’s 531

to win taking three points from the
Hambos. C. Williams set the pace
with 523, K. Orkwis rolled 517 and
F. Cornell posted 515. S. Bonomo hit
210 for the Hambos. Bermudas
dropped three to the Beach Com-
bers without high games from any
of the 10 bowlers. Better luck next
week, men! 3
