i Wilkes-Barre Fats By LEE L. RICHARDS Sports Columnist In a typical hard hitting contest, Dallas prevailed over Lake- Lehman, 14-zip, and will house the Old Shoe for the next year. Coach Ron Rybak went into the annual clash for the Back Mountain bragging rights hoping to out- finesse Coach Mark Kirk’s rugged defensive- minded Knights, but the Black and Gold was up to the task. “At the half, we decided that we couldn’t gen- erate anything with the fancy stuff, so we decided to come out in the second-half and run right of scrimmage and we were able to move the football more effectively,” said Rybak. Dallas and Lake-Lehman were not able to run any sophisticated things on offense all season. They simply ran basic plays with solid blocking and hoped for the best. The Big D defenders went into the game hoping to limit Lake- Lehman’s Stu Thomas, as he was the Knights’ bread-and-butter man flung the football. By stopping omas, they forced the Knights into doing things which they weren’t accustomed to doing. Rybak said that Joe Simon’s return to the secondary was a big lift for his defense. Jerry Mihalick’s kicking was another plus for the winners. Greg Manusky stood out on both sides of the football as usual. He closed out an excellent seasen by being in on 16 tackles, giving him 140 on the year. He has had 11 sacks and two interceptions, one returned for an 80-yard TD. He should receive serious consideration for All-Star laurels. Dallas defense closed out the points in the last 13 quarters. Coach Rybak has led the Mountai- neers to a 3-1-1 mark against the Knights in the Old Shoe clash. His only loss came in his initial season. FOOTBALL ODDS AND ENDS: Former GAR Coach John Rowlands informed me recently that he was impressed with the overall play of Lake-Lehman gridders Chris Van- Gorder and Marty Onzik. “These two youngsters played a heckuva game against GAR. I was told by several Lake-Lehman fans they played tough all. year,” said Rowlands. When I predicted the Eagles would be just an ordinary team this season, I didn’t expect them to be this bad. They aren’t even competi- tive anymore. Couldn’t believe a team which is the defending national champs would settle for a tie like Penn State did in the Pitt game. The Panthers clearly dominated the Nittany Lions, but turnovers kept them in the contest. PSU’s reign as defend- ing champs ranks with the poorest of all-time or close to it! West Virginia, which called itself the beast of the East after its win over Pitt, got it stuck to them again by a rugged Syracuse team. The Orange played the toughest slate in the East and managed a 6-5 record which is remarkable. I wonder if CBS has wiped the egg off its face predicting during the WVU-Pitt game that “The Mountaineers had the inside track to the Sugar Bowl’? Rutgers pulled a sorry act in firing its coaching staff. Head Coach Frank Burns did a splendid job with the scarce budget he and his staff had to operate with. The Scarlet Knights want to play with the big timers in the East, but they obviously weren’t willing to pay the price. I know Rutgers alum Bob Saul is disappointed. His close pal Bill Speranza, a capable coach, is out of a job after spending nearly 20 years as a player and coach at RU. Talking with several roundball coaches locally, most believe Lake- Lehman and Dallas will be right in the thick of the title chase this LEGAL NOTICE OF LAKE-LEHMAN SCHOOL DISTRICT ‘Notice is hereby given that the report of the auditors of the Lake- Lehman School District for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1983, was filed on the 1st day of November, 1983, in the Office of the Prothonotary of Luzerne County, and the same will be confirmed absolutely unless’ an appeal is taken therefrom within thirty (30) days after the filing thereof. Both have heady and knowl- edgeable coaches and some dedi- cated youngsters to work with. At a glance I'd have to rate Coach Rodger Bearde’s pre-season sched- ule as a real grinder. Here’s how I voted for Football Writers of America All-American defensive team: Linemen: Reggie White, Tennessee; William Perry, Clemson; Rick Bryan, Oklahoma; Donnie Humphrey, Auburn; Bill Maas, Pitt. Linebackers: Jeff Leid- ing, Texas; Andy Ponseigo, Navy. Deep Backs: Terry Hoage, Georgia; Tom Flynn, Pitt; Russ Carter, SMU; Don Rogers, UCLA. Place. kicker, Paul Woodside, West Vir- ginia. Punter Jimmy Colquitt, Ten- nesee. I'm sure Penn State’s Mark Robinson would have been A-A had he not been injured. The notoriety Bill Bates is receiv- ing as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys is no surprise to me. I accompanied Coach John Majors to a high school playoff game in Knox- ville one night to see Bates perform. Majors liked what he saw of Bates as a running back. He was a fixture in the Vols secondary for four years. I guess I was one of the few that voted for him as an All-Ameri- can. He's always been a heady defender. I keep hearing rumors that J.P. Meck is going to be ousted as coach at Coughlin, despite his brilliant record. According to a source, Meyers’ Mick Gorman has already been approached, but has turned down the job to stay at Mohawk land. W-B School Board is in for some heat if they go through with the move as Coach Meck is very popular with his players and Cough- lin followers. Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s Gerry (Farce) Faust is on borrowed time. Several of my college coaching pals claim he hasn’t done the job and the Irish defense is poorly prepared and coached. Faust should have retained Joe Yonto, who built cham- pionship stop units for Ara and Devine. The very capable Yonto is an administrative assistant to the Farce. Please put the tangled line in your pocket and take it home. Do not leave it near the water. Sometimes birds become trapped and die in the line that is left behind by careless anglers. Discarded line is like any trash left along the shore, but it cane be more than just an eyesore. It can be dangerous, so give wild- life a helping hand - POCKET IT!
