High School cagers opened their
exhibition season last Friday with a
65-57 win over Wyoming Area, but
were nipped 59-58 in Saturday
night’s game with Nanticoke.
Despite trailing the Trojans
throughout most of the contest at
Dallas, the Mountaineers rallied in
the closing seconds to come within
one point on a two point shot by Ed
Gorey. With no time outs remain-

ing, Dallas was unable to get the
ball since the Trojans never
inbounded in the final seconds and
ran down the clock.
It was the Trojans’ Paul Guffrov-
ich’s foul shot at the five second
mark on the clock that gave Nanti-
coke a three point lead, leaving
them one up when Gorey put in his
shot.
Dave Thomas set the scoring pace
for the Mountaineers with 19 points
while Gorey hit 18 and Mark Farrell
racked up 17.
In Friday night's game, Dave
Thomas hit a game high 26 points

with 12 of them in the third period
to give the Mountaineers a 55-32
lead going into the final quarter.
Dallas outscored the Warriors, 22-5,
in the third quarter.
“We started slow in the Wyoming
game,” said Coach, Ozgo. “But in
the third quarter the boys played
great defense and a good running
game. Throughout the second half,
they got on the boards but got a
little sloppy toward the end.
“They did the same thing in the
Nanticoke game. They started slow,
but got going in the second half then
ran out of time in the final quarter.
Gorey played a good inside game
and Thomas and Farrell did a great
job on the outside.
“Greg Manusky has just come out
after the football season and is
doing a fine job. Steve Wilson is
doing a good job running the team
and when Tim Grove is in condition
we should be in great shape. We're
hoping for a good season, but we’ll
take it one game at a time. It’s too
early to make any predictions.”
