Again it was Borton who scored, going in to the endzone, from the one-yard line. Walsh hit Jim Gorman for two points to give I’ll lead the way Black Knight Chris Wargo (No. 15) was a little luckier on this play as he prepares to scamper Dallas a 16-0 lead. “We knew we had to stop Stu Thomas and we did,” said Rybak. “I was worried about Chris Wargo taking over for Thomas, but our kids stopped him as well. I’ve watched Lake-Lehman play and Wargo is good. For the record The Old Shoe is a football shoe that was actually worn by Bruce Griffiths, captain of the 1948-49 Kingston Township High School football team. The shoe, which rests on a red mahogany base, was bronzed by the Dallas Rotary Club in 1948 and originally awarded to. the winner of the Dallas Township/ Kingston Township Thanksgiv- ing Day game. Following the merger of all Back Mountain schools, the Old Shoe Trophy remained in exist- ence and is now presented annually to the winner of the Dallas-Lake-Lehman football game. Much thanks to a Shavertown resident for bringing this to our attention and setting the record straight. field last Saturday with one ambi- «tion - to win the game and take home the Old Shoe trophy, the trophy that goes each year: to the winner of the Dallas/Lake-Lehman football game. Last season, the Mountaineers and the Knights tied and each school had possession of the shoe for half of the year. Not so this season as the Mountai- neers ground out a 16-0 shutout over the Lake-Lehman Knights on the ‘Dallas field. “Mike Borton started the momen- tum. He had five carries for 20 yards for our first touchdown in the \ opening of the third quarter. His * touchdown came less than six min- utes into the quarter when he went over tackle Fedro. Gerry Mihalick was roughed up on his kick so we had another chance for the extra points. Bernie Walsh ran around the right side for two points and we | were in the lead 8-0, while Lake-Lehman quarterback T. Willy “Lake-Lehman has nothing to be ashamed of. They are dedicated players and a well-coached team. We were lucky enough to win this year and have the old shoe until next game in 1984. That will be another ball game.” Knight Coach Mark Kirk said after the game, “The Mountaineers were much bigger than we expected. Our defense played a great game against Dallas during the first half, but they took control in the third quarter. They went right at our line of scrimmage and scored two touchdowns in eight min- utes. wy gp - 30 2 3 oe TR a ; 0 u ta m y way Dallas Post/Ed Campbell Mike Borton of Dallas (No. 34) gives Lake-Lehman’s Jeff Ruzicki (No. 51) a shove in an attempt to get to Black Knight runningback Jeff Martin (No. 10). Perhaps the worst kept secret in America is the bowl bids. I couldn’t polls, I’d take then all head-to-head are always overrated. While Georgia has a nice football team, the Dawgs are 0-4-1 against Pitt and Penn State. Panthers have three wins and were tied by Georgia David Morris and finally forced a corner kick that was taken by Scott Shafer who powered the ball to the feet of Morris who tapped it in the net. Following a goal by Macungie, United’s equalizer came when Mike Richards skyrocketed a shot over the heads of all players from the 22- yard marker that had Macungie goalkeeper completely beaten as it dropped behind him into the net. The winning goal came off the boot of Jimmie Lister after a fine run down the wing by Dale Root who pushed the ball into the center for Paul Melone to pass onto Lister.
