Semi finals in Divisions I, II and III were played on Saturday, Nov. 5 and finals on Sunday, Nov. 6. For the last month, Divisions 1 and III have been playing a double elimination tournament which has brought out the competitive spirit in all, players and spectators alike. Double elimination gives each team two chances. This is the first year the Association has held such a tournament and questionnaires were passed out amongst the teams to find out the players’ opinions on how this, and Back Mountain soccer generally are organized. It is interesting to note that 415 games have been played by the B.M.Y S.A. this season: Division I has played 42 regular and 12 tourna- ment games; Division II, 92 regular and 26 tournament games; Division Get involved! Mo III, 104 regular and 28 tournament games and Division IV, 95 games. There was no tournament for Divi- sion IV, the seven and eight year olds, as their’s was mainly an instructional division. The traveling team has played 16 games and are having a very good first season. The additional number of games has meant a greater need for refer- ees. Head referee Arno Miller has had quite a job scheduling games and finding refs for them all. He had a pool of approximately 25, some fathers, some already coach- ing, some experienced and some who learned at the clinic organized at the start of the season. Every Saturday there have been 26 games to be refereed and some have done double duty on more than one occa- on the lookout for more people to come forward and offer their serv- ices. Playing under FIFA rules one referee and two linesmen are required for each game. The lines- men were drawn from spectators at the games. The highlight of Saturday was the game between coaches which has become quite a tradition. It is a chance for the coaches and their assistants to get out on the field and practice what they have been telling their teams for the past three months. The teams were drawn from those 30 stalwart souls who braved the cold, including. two women -coaches. HHIt was a lively: and well con- tested game,” according to Art Kirk, a coach for several years. Dallas Post/Ed Campbell “The skill level was greater than previous years.’ The team captained by Paul Sane- holtz scored six goals to the two by Ron Moran’s team. Saneholtz team’s goals were scored by Glen Kern (2), Art Kirk (2), Bruce Kern will play the referees team next weekend. They are all hoping for warmer weather to bring out more spectators as this is a chance for the kids to come out and watch and cheer on their favorite coaches and referees. After the final games were played on Sunday, awards were distributed to the winning teams and runners up in each division. The winners were presented with trophies and the runners up with plaques. Results of the final game were Division I, Kicks 2, Rowdies 0; Division II, Rowdies 2, Express 1; Division III, Fury 3, Sting 1. Also at the awards ceremony presentations were made to the “Founding Fathers” of Back Moun- tain Soccer. Plaques were presented to Skip Davis, George Lister, John Isaac, Bruce Kern, Frank Chad- wick, Art Kirk, Hugh Mundy and Ken Kozel. All these people have been instrumental in setting up and continuing the Association and it was felt they deserved some form of recognition and appreciation.
