    There are so many differ-
ent types of winter tires on the
market that making the
proper selection for your car
can be confusing, says the
Automotive Information
Council (AIC). Consumers
today can choose from radi-
als, all-season tires, regular
snow tires and studded tires.
AIC has compiled the fol-
lowing winter tire shopping
tips to help the motorist:
© Radials give better trac-
tion than regular bias or
ias tires and will work
in light snow.
© All-season radial tires are
give even better traction in
snow, slush and ice than reg-
ular radials and have little of
the noise associated with
snow tires on dry pavement.
All-season tires are best for
areas of the country where,
there is generally not a great
deal of snow build-up at any
o If radial snow tires are
mounted on only the drive
wheels, be sure the other
two tires are radials as well
Combining radials and bias
tires may seriously impair
handling.
© In a front-wheel drive car,
put snow tires on the front
wheels, instead of on the back
as you would on a rear-drive
car.
© Studs are helpful under
icy conditions, but are illegal

THIS IS NOT AN UNFAMILIAR SIGHT to many of us who
wait just a little too long to have our windshield wiper blades
replaced. Unlike most parts of a car, windshield wipers need
periodic replacement whether they are used frequently or not.
The rubber wiping blade deteriorates from the elements, road
salt and man-made air pollution more than from wiping water
from the windshield, says Car Care Council. Wiper blades are
easy to replace. So, for the growing number of motorists who
patronize self-serve gas stations, attention to windshield wip-
ers is essentially important. Windshield washer solvent should
be checked regularly, too, reminds the Council. Part of every
car-owner’s under-hood inspection should be this fluid res-
ervoir, which can be refilled from a container of solvent car-
ried in the car.
‘Winter’s tough on your
car. Not just under the
hood, but on the exterior
finish too. Water, salt,
grime—they all can attack
your car’s finish and grad-
ually eat it away. The right
kind of car care can help.
Thanks to modern tech-
nology, now you can apply
dealer-strength polymer
sealants yourself for a frac-
tion of the cost.
And, what’s even better,
the durability, protection
and shine of these “do-it-
yourselfers” is actually
equal to, if not better than,
the dealer-applied version.
Of this category of “do-it-
yourselfers,” PolyShell™
polysealant is an excellent
choice. PolyShell has ma-
cromolecules that pene-

winterize your car’s finish,
PolyShell provides the most
durable finish available at
any price. In fact, PolyShell
is guaranteed to outper-
form regular car waxes or
any other one-step poly-
sealants. Guaranteed, or
your money back.
And PolyShell gives you
protection and shine with-
out a lot of work. It’s as easy
to apply as conventional
waxes. Available in liquid
and paste, application time
is usually less than two
hours and the recently in-
troduced PolyShell spray
can actually be applied in
less than 15 minutes.
This year, when you win-
terize your car, don’t forget
the exterior. A little care
now can make a big differ-
ence later.
Weather researchers at
most major universities
across the country agree that
long range weather forecast-
ing is a complete guess.
What winter has in store for
this year is not known by the
scientific community, but car
care experts advise drivers to
prepare cars for winter
weather, and play it safe.
“Conduct a little preven-
weather ahead,” says Walt
“Doc” Alley, Director of
Training at the Midas Insti-
tute of Technology (M.L.T.),
in Palatine, IL.
Alley suggests starting with
a thorough inspection of your
automobile’s vital systems by
getting an annual under-the-
car inspection and tune-up.
Tough winter roads can
damage the exhaust system,
merous potholes.
In addition, colder tem-
peratures require additional
battery power for start-ups,
and worn spark plugs, faulty
distributor points or a weak
ignition coil can mean a long
truck.
You don’t need a profes-
tive maintenance now, and
you could save yourself a
good deal of trouble and
money this winter, whether
we have mild or harsh

gasoline
ature within proper limits.
Replacing this part is a mi-
nor expense that can pay for
itself in a short time says Car
Care Council. A thermostat
that’s stuck open will cause
the engine to run cold, in-
creasing gasoline consump-
tion by as much as 10 to 20
percent. If it sticks in the
closed position, the car will
the engine.
Another valve in the cool-
ing system is the radiator
pressure cap which keeps the
cooling system under pres-
sure, thereby increasing the
boiling point of the coolant.
When the pressure cap fails,
the engine may overheat and
coolant goes into the reser-
voir tank, eventually over-
flowing to the ground.
A visual check of the pres-
sure cap may expose a faulty
gasket or weak spring. But the
best check is with a pressure
tester designed for this pur-
pose, generally used by most
service shops. This indicates
the condition of the cap and
tests the rest of the cooling
system for leaks.
For a primer on the cool-
ing system, how it works and
how to keep it working, send
a stamped, self-addressed en-
velope to Automotive Cool-
ing System Institute for the
booklet “A Quick Course ix
How do you know when
your engine needs a tune-up?
1. A noticeable increase in
fuel consumption. Keep a
running record of fuel con-
sumed versus mileage driven
to be aware of increasing
consumption.
2. Rough idling or rough-
ness on acceleration.
3. Hard starting.
4. Dieseling or run-on
where the engine continues to
run a few seconds after the ig-
nition is turned off.
5. Knocking or pinging,
especially under load. (This
can be caused by running on
fuel of insufficient octane; but
it can also be. due to the need
for tune-up adjustment.)

While the new breed of
American car is vastly more
fuel efficient than its coun-
terpart of just a few years ago,
it still requires periodic ser-
vice and adjustments, re-
placement of necessary fuel
and ignition components to
keep it running that way.
