Wilkes-Barre Fats
By LEE L. RICHARDS
‘Sports Columnist
We appreciate the assistance from the Lake-Lehman
school officials and wrestling Coach Ed Ladamus in
organizing the upcoming wrestling clinic which will
feature Coach Rich Lorenzo and his PSU staff.
Rich, a long time pal since his wrestling days for the
Nittany Lions, is considering bringing along a couple
of his standout matmen. John Fritz, former NCAA
champ, is another excellent clinician. He has played
key role in the Nittany Lions rise on the national level.
Lorenzo has been the Eastern Wrestling League’s
Coach of the Year the past two seasons.
Why the turn around in Penn State wrestling? Give
some credit to St. Joe. It seems when he was the AD,
St. Joe, who likes wrestling to an extent, decided to
pump some much needed money into the program.
Lions really never had the full compliment of scholar-
ships like the Oklahomas and Iowas in the past.
However, when Lorenzo took over the reins from
Bill Koll, whom I have always believed was one of the
best around, he emphasized from the beginning the
necessary steps PSU would have to take to be a major
power. Lorenzo has a well-laid plan and the Nittany
Lions aren’t too far away from finishing in the top five
in the country.
Ever since I worked at the Centre Daily Times in
State College back in 1967, I have believed Penn State
could and will win a national championship in
wrestling. At that time, there wasn’t a whole lot of
money being put into the program and, consequently
PSU would have only several quality wrestlers on
scholarship. That has all changed in recent years.
PSU has a very strong wrestling booster club and the
Lions are attracting top-notch wrestlers in bigger
numbers now. :
The last two years, Lorenzo’s teams have won the
Eastern Mat Poll which is presented to the top dual
meet team in Eastern Collegiate ranks. I won’t be at
all surprised to see the Blue and White dominate again
this season.
CLIPBOARD NOTES: Elated to learn former Dallas
gridders Greg Dukinas and Jerry Rollman have made
an immediate impact on the Moravian program. Both
are not bashful when it comes to knocking folks
around on the football field.
The CBS team of Pat Hayden and Gary Bender is
too redundant and seems to sensationalize every play.
When they mentioned West Virginia had inside track
Run for

to the Sugar Bowl if the Mountaineers beat Pitt, I
almost fell off my chair. That’s pure lunacy! Only five
games into the season, trips to Penn State and Miami
down the road. Get serious, fellows!
Speaking of West Virginia, I am still not convineed
the Mountaineers are a good football team. They lack
the exceptional running back and speedsters at the
receiver slots. They have a lot of players performing
above their ability at the present time. :
One of the big disappointments thus far this season
is the lackluster play of the Penn State defense. I
believed it would be more of a factor in the early
going.
Did you see the rinky-dink maneuver by the Jets’
Mark Gastineau on the side lines during the recent
Monday night game? He was arm wrestling with the
hit with a fine.
ABC’s Beano Cook is still stumbling around with his
college football insights. Last week he was extolling
Arizona as the next national champ. The Wildcats had
over a 20-point lead on Cal and left the Bear tie them.
Come on, Beano, get dkwn to reality. He also claimed
the PAC 10 was the best conference going. At the
present time, I would cast my vote to the SEC as the
most competitive. :
Here’s my Super Seven - 1-Nebraska, 2-Texas, 3-
Alabama, 4-North Carolina, 5-Florida, 6-Auburn, 7-
Miami.
Here are some interesting tid-bits on the NFL: 37 of
the first 70 games played have been decided by seven
points or less. The visiting teams have won 40 times to
30 for the home clubs.
Concerning collegiate football, I'm convinced after
the early going this season that if you don’t have a
gifted quarterback you are only going to be ordinary
at best. That's the reason for Pitt and PSU struggling.
Joe Urban is smiling these days over Pitt’s Dan
Marino getting the starting nod with the Dolphins.
Marino was much maligned by the Pittsburgh Press
performance. Urban became a Marino fan from our
visit to the Pitt-Notre Dame game. Danny always had
a lot of style. Urban has predicted big things for
Marino, but starting for a team which went to the
Super Bowl last season? That’s incredible.
