liamsport Hospital and is open to all
blood donors of N.E. Pennsylvania
who pledge to donate blood five
times a year.
The club originated from a
thought by Paul Hodges, of Dallas,
American Red Cross Director of
Donor Resources, shortly after he
joined the Red Cross. Donors were
invited to make an appointment for
their next donation; this was called
forward booking and was immedi-
ately successful with 90 percent
signing up, of which seven in 10
returned for the following collection.
The Red Cross felt such faithful
donors deserved recognition and the
Deca Donor Club was born. The
word ‘Deca’ stems from the Greek
for 10, implying every 10 weeks and
the membership pin embodies five
arrows signifying five donations in a
year. The pin is the creation of
Nancy Carmon, Public Relations
Coordinator at the Blood Center in
Wilkes-Barre. A pin is awarded at
the completion of each fifth dona-
tion.
Deca Donor Clubs have now been
formed around donor groups at Wil-
liamsport Hospital, Mercy Hospitl,
Wilkes-Barre, Wilkes-Barre City
Center Blood Council, Scranton
Center City Blood Council, as well
as the Back Mountain Blood Coun-
cil. Plans are underway for clubs at
the Abington, Pittston and Nanti-
coke Blood Councils as well as
groups in Milton, Williamsport and
‘similar communities. Current mem-
“bership is in excess of 600.
