Wilkes-Barre Fats By LEE L. RICHARDS Sports Columnist While in Pittsburgh last week 1 had the opportunity to attend the annual Curbstone Coaches Lunch- eon at the Allegheny Club in Three Rivers Stadium. I was Pitt Coach Andy Urbanic’s guest and got to break bread with some of the Pan- ther whips. Bob Prince, former announcer for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was one of the masters of ceremeuny. Prince was one of my all-time favorite announcers and did a heap of pro- moting for the Bucs. Coach Urbanic was one of the guest speakers and touched on some of the highlights of Pitt’s 2-0 start. People close to this Pitt team have been playing down the Panthers overall ability. They’re taking things one game at a time. Saturday will be a tough test when Pitt visits Maryland and tackle the Terps high-powered offense. Woody Widenhofer, assistant head coach of the Steelers, told the stand- ing room gathering that this edition of the Steel City team could surprise a lot of folks before the season is Every YAMAHA Motorcycle, In Stock At Reduced Prices. According to him it was to be a simple type of surgery. “T’ll attempt to throw in another two weeks. I'm optimistic about my chances of playing this season. On the other hand, (Cliff) Stoudt has performed very well. He’s playing so well that maybe I won’t be able to win my job back.” Bradshaw said he’d like to play for another four years. He claims he’s in tip-top condition. One Steeler buff asked him to compare this year’s defensive unit with the Steel Curtain. Terry replied: ‘The Steel Curtain was good for seven points every game. They simply intimidated people This group will make its own repu- tation, but there was only one Steel Curtain.” The luncheon was a classy affair. CLIPBOARD NOTES: Despite being in pennant race, Pirates still aren’t the drawing card in Pitts- burgh you'd expect. Sunday they drew a little over 19,000 against the Phillies. It’s a sorry situation...How about our All-East running back Troy Stradford’s performance against Clemson? He’s only a sopho- more at Boston College and was one of my selections to Eastern Foot- ball’s All-East team. He's got some ability...While in Pittsburgh it was amusing to hear that TV folks had not made commitment to carry Penn State-Pitt game. The reason: Pitt's record going into the game? Pitt had to prove it belonged on the same field with the defending national champs. PSU is one that must justify now that it belongs and the loss to Cincinnati didn’t help matters. . Penn State has already gone in record books taking worst defeat in an opener by defending team. Nit- tany Lions added to that by drop- ping second consecutive game, while being a 27-point favorite. While many PSU fans were scrambling around after the Nebraska onslaught, one asked me if the Orange Bowl folks would extend Nittany Lions an invite and possible rematch with the powerful Huskers? I doubted that very much because of the way the Huskers dominated the Lions. DALLAS 7-9 P.M. sional Athlete A.B.F.P.
