Fire destroys barn
An early morning fire on Sept. 6
completely destroyed a large sec-
tion of a barn and milking parlor on
the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Kuzma at Vernon in Northmoreland
Twp. The fire was called in at 5:27
a.m., according to Alan Pugh,
Northmoreland Twp. Volunteer Fire
Co. chief.
Though estimated damage was
placed at upwards of $60,000, no one
was injured in the blaze. Nine vol-
unteer fire companies from the
northern end of Luzerne County and
the southern end of Wyoming
County responded. It took several
hours to extinguish the blaze. In
addition to several hundred bales of
new made hay, expensive milking
machines were destroyed in the
blaze.
About 60 head of high grade Hol-
stein cattle were moved from the
barn and the only loss in livestock
was a calf. It took family members
about 10 minutes to get the cattle
from the barn to the field.
With the help of some neighbors,
about 30, the cows were chased
about three miles down Route 292 to
the Brown farm where the Kuzmas
are housing and milking their herd.

Residents argue plan
Residents of Kingston Twp. vowed
to fight the township’s planning
commission’s backing of a proposed
landfill on Bunker Hill.
Approximately 50 township resi-
dents attended a meeting Sept. 6
and angrily voiced their disapproval
of allowing John Brdaric Jr. to
operate the landfill.
Brdaric’s plans are to store used
building materials and fill open pits
with debris such as concrete,
bricks, brush and other materials
from demolished buildings.
In order for the landfill to oper-
ate, the zoning classification of the
land must be changed from the
present conservation classification
to mining status to comply with
township and state regulations.
Three members of the five-
member board who were present at
the Sept.6 meeting voted in favor of
Brdaric’s request for a required
zone change.
Police get increase
A six percent across-the-board
salary increase for the Dallas Town-
ship Police Force is presently being
negotiated. The announcement was
made by Supervisor Frank Wagner
at a Sept. "6 meeting of the township
Supervisors.
Under the proposed two-year con-
tract, the officers have requested an
increase of $750 for 1984, and $950
for 1985, a $100 increase in their $300
holiday pay and a widow’s pension
fund.
The contract is expected to be
signed in October.
Agreement is made
Dallas Township and Ecumenical
Enterprises, Inc. have entered into
an easement agreement for the use
of a fire pond located at the Mead-
ows complex in Dallas.
The township currently has a 25-
year agreement but wanted a life-

time commitment. The EEI, how-
ever, was afraid the easement
would hinder a possible future sale
of the complex.
