RICHARDS Sports Columnist CLIPBOARD NOTES: The Col- lege football season got off to a bang last week with the embarrass- ment of Penn State’s Nittany Lions by the powerful Nebraska Cornhus- kers. Nebraska completely domi- nated the game, but several things surprised me: Penn State came on the field with the No. 1 sign clearly evident. During the pre-game hoopla, PSU folks attempted to down play the significance of the game, but were first in line for the half-million dollar payoff. Once again, St. Joe (Paterno) outsmarted himself by not having a capable quarterback ready to step into the line of fire. He has a history of not having a QB groomed when his senior starter departs. I was also surprised at how the Big Red exploited the PSU defense which I believed was going to be very heady and aggressive this season. So much for the bad news, Nit- tany Lion buffs. Now for the good news. I've got a hunch the Lions will still win eight or nine games. Why? Simply because they do have enough solid performers to match- up with the remaining teams on their schedule, perhaps with the exception of Alabama and Notre Dame. The only drawback in these two games could be coaching. Whether or not. Ray Perkins can have the tide prepared as thor- oughly as the Great One did remains to be seen. Gerry Faust (Farce) hasn't been a world beaterwith the Irish, either. Regular $17.50 each Overall, I'd be willing to wager the Lions will be close to or in the Top 10 at season’s end and headed for a bowl clash. Here’s my revised Super Seven: 1. Nebraska, 2. Auburn, 3. Okla- homa, 4. North Carolina, 5. USC, 6. Alabama, 7. Florida State. I’ve mentioned previously. that if I had my choice of college QBs, Nebraska’s Turner Gill and Ala- bama’s Walter Lewis would be my selections to handle the offense. Both are very similar in running the option and throwing the football. Neither is mentioned on the A-A check lists, which is ludicrous. Another fact regarding PSU down through the years has been the Lions’ inability to cope with any team that runs the option such as Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee in the 1970s, Nebraska and Ohio State when Woody had the Buckeyes. I found it amusing how Channel 16’s Joe ‘‘Twilight”” Zone was stunned when media from around the country started rapping Penn State during the Nebraska blowout. Zone can't be so naive to believe Penn State is America’s team, can earned. All of the media hype can’t make believers out of cynics, Joe. Every college football team has a disaster plan. St. Joe will imple- ment his,’ make the necessary per- sonnel adjustments and strive for some much needed continuity. One game isn’t time enough to make an accurate appraisal. After Pitt's All-World offensive tackle Bill Fralic (6-5, 290) flattened three members of the defensive unit in succession in a recent scrim- 5599 675-2143 IT WOULD PAY Assured All Winter ® Automatic Fuel Service YOU When You ® Budget Plan ® Financing ® Free Estimates who tutored Bill at Penn Hills High, made this sideline observation: ‘He looked like a bowling ball there. Boom, boom, boom. He does it right in front of the grandstand, too. Even 2 bind man could appreciate those its.” On the local scene, I keep hearing promising things concerning the Dallas gridders getting some mental toughness. I guarantee you one thing, Coaches Chuck Suppon and Bill Silvi aren’t ones to sit back when folks aren’t carrying out their assignments. Head Coach Ron Rybak has two very dedicated guys there. I was glad to see Judge Art against the PIAA and allow Dave Blazejewski to suit up and play for the Crusaders. What is ironic about the alleged recruiting infraction posed to have done, is that not one local grid coach bad-mouthed Meck, but took his side. The incident involving the PIAA was just another humpty-dumpty venture. Several football coaches cited Hoban’s recruitment of swimmers and never being called on the carpet, yet when players leave the city school, they're the first ones to cry foul! Wasn't it a bit absurd that several bowl scouts were on hand for the Nebraska-PSU game last week?
