i I NY Qe / Lars Ebbeson By JOAN KINGSBURY Staff Correspondent Lars Ebbeson, an American Exchange student from Silkeborg, Denmark is spending this year with the John Sheehan family of Overbrook Avenue, Dallas. Having arrived in late July, Lars explained what his homeland is like. He said his home in Denmark is located in the Juteland region and that his father, Niels, is an upholsterer and his mother, Karen, helps with the upholstering business. Lars has a sister Maj, age 12, and years old, is a graduate of Virklund School. Lars will be a senior at Dallas Senior High School this year where he hopes to play volley- route during his visit here. Lars is looking for- ward to hunting season and explained that in Denmark, a person can begin to hunt at the age of 16. However, only those owning hunting property can hunt in Denmark. Lars enjoys outdoor sports, swimming, wind surfing, canoeing, vol- leyball and badminton. In Denmark, he explains, badminton is taken very seriously with great cup competi- tions being held. Although soccer is a very popular sport in Denmark, Lars is not too enthusiastic about it Lars described his homeland as-flat, where there are no raw mate- rials available and minister and a queen. Queen Margretha II has no actual power, but performs public cere- monies. Lutheran is the state for ceremonies like con- firmation and mar- riage. Lars said Danish food 1983-84 school year. Lars likes to cook, but doesn’t enjoy baking. Lars finds American television stations inter- esting since Denmark has only one state-oper- sonian Institute. The Sheehans plan to visit New York City and pos- sibly Disney World and and a Penn State foot- ball game are being considered. With his American family, Lars has already vacationed in family life to be busier than that of the Danish family. The Sheehan family who is president of the Dallas Chapter of AFS; Heather, a senior at Dallas High School; and John, a ninth grader at Dallas Junior get to know American teens, and at least for a year, become a part of the American culture.
