Program helps cleanup Five to 10 years ago, storms similar to those recently experienced would have caused Swoy- ersville residents costly basement flooding and property damage due to surface runoffs and see- page. However, in recent years the fruits of an inter- minable Urban Renewal Program have proven worthwhile as heavy storms are easily handled by the Borough’s Storm Sewer and Flood Control System. The re-channeling of Abraham’s Creek has been a primary reason for the successful conveyance of storm water from this pre- dominantly residential community to the Susque- hanna River. In addition, however, four major pumps augment the creek’s performance in areas of the community where the gravity flows of water is inhibited by physkcal or topographical obstacles. Pumps located at Slocum St., Simpson St., White St. and Dan St. have transformed previously easily flooded neighbor- hoods into relatively dry areas in the heaviest of storms. ough’s system is based on a 75 year design storm although the creek and major ponding areas are based on a 100 year design storm. Council chairman Michael Emershaw recalled worrying about what street to use in reaching home some years ago, prior to the improve- ments. ‘“‘So many of our streets had flooded inter- sections that it was some- times necessary to go quite a distance out of one’s way to reach home. Slocum St., Church St., Dana St., Kossack St., Hughes St., Owens St. all were virtually unpassable. Those among our people who are newer residents cannot begin to realize what our long time resi- dents experienced.” Similarly other borough residents speak reflec- tively of pumping out basements all night during a moderate rainfall. Emershaw, who did not seek re-election cautioned, “Our people should not forget those days because as yas go by they will be asked to pay for the con- tinued maintenance of this system. Failure to do so may allow history to repeat itself and none of us want that.” In the meantime, many a Swoyersville resident will rest easy as opposed to standing watch over a basement sump pump. Football games begin Aug. 21 Old times will come back to life Sunday, Aug. 21, at Roosvelt Field on Church St., Swoyersville as the Swoyersville Jr. Sailors A Team will host the Forty Fort Flyers A Team in the first game of the Greater Pittston Jr. Football League. Coach Paul Pasek’s Sail- ors, minus several of its stars from last year’s pen- nant and playoff and Super Bowl champs, will try to keep the title in Swoyers- ville. The Flyers will be trying to retaliate from last year as they were beaten by a 33-6 score at the Flyers’ field. This game reminds many of our older fans of the late 30’s and 40’s when the two high schools would play the first game of the season and with the bon fires and bit, this really brings back memories. Coach Pasek is assisted by Don Covert, Ted Gabel and Bruce Lykon. 36:39 59 Joe Raniali R Ph. Club makes trip ‘Pine Tar Home Run’ the trip.
