The Object of Rotary
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the
ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in
particular to encourage and foster:
First. The development of acquaintance as an op-
portunity for service;
Second. High ethical standards in business and
professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all
useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian
of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third. The application of the idea of service by every
Rotarian to his personal, business and community life;
Fourth. The advancement of international under-
standing, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship
of business and professional men united in the ideal of
service.
Dallas Rotary
Seventy-eight years ago the first Rotary Club was
founded in Chicago, Ill. March 1927, found Rotary esta-
blished in Dallas, Pa. For the past fifty-six years, the
Dallas Rotary Club has through its members, provided
the vehicle in which the power of service has been trans-
mitted back into the community.
As a Rotary Club, Dallas is one of some 20,216 clubs
with an estimated membership of 921,000 members in 157
countries whose main object is ‘Service aboveself’’.
Rotary is an organization of business and professional
men united world-wide who provide humanitarian
service, encourage high ethical standards in all
vocations, and help build goodwill and peace throughout
the world. p
Rotary endeavors to develop the individual and
through this development enable him to find his place in
the community and to serve in that place; to cause him
to consider his citizenship in its relation to the world, the
nation and the community; and to think of his business or
profession as a avenue for service. \
Fundamentally, Rotary is a philosophy of life that
undertakes to reconcile the ever-present conflict bet-
ween the desire to profit from one’s self and the duty and
consequent impulse to serve others. This philosophy is
the philosophy of service - “Service aboveself’’ - and is
based on the practical ethical principle that ‘‘He profits
most who serves best’.
Because he who serves must act, Rotary is not merely
a state of mind, nor a philosophy merely subjective, but
must translate itself into objective activity; and the
individual Rotarian and the Rotary Club must put the
theory of service into practice.
It is desirable that every Rotary Club sponsor a
community service project, varied from year to year if
possible. This activity is to be based upon a real com-
munity need and should require the collective coopera-
tion of all its members. Over the years the Dallas Rotary
Club has maintained this philosophy in such community
projects as the Back Mountain Library Auction, Fall
Fair, and the Dallas Area School District to mention but
a few.
Among the many activities engaged in by members of
the Dallas Rotary Club during the past year:
Participation in the annual Back Mountain Library
Auction, along with Rotary Anns working long hours to
help make the auction a financial success.
Participation in the Back Mountain Fall Fair.
--Producing the Bobby Baird Dixieland Jazz Band in
concert, which raised $5,000.00 for Dallas Rotary Club’s
Charities Fund. The monies fromthis fund was then
distributed among organizations in the Back Mountain
communities.
--Dedicated. to raising funds for the Wyoming Valley
Crippled Children’s Association, a Basketball Shootout
involving local youngsters raised $2,000.00.
--The Club through its members made Christmas a lot
merrier for a group of underprivileged children of the
Back Mountain on the Christmas Shopping Spree.
—-Awarding of four $150.00 Book Scholarships to two
worthy students in the graduating class of both Dallas
Senior High School and Lake-Lehman High School.
Sending four boys representing Dallas and Lake-
' Lehman High School to Rotary Leadership Camp at a
cost of $400.00.
Presentation of an electronic lectern to the residents
of the Meadows Complex.
To our Rotary Ann’s who for many years have
maintained a “Wheel Chair Fund” very quietly and
unassuming, our special thanks, as well as for their time
and effort in helping we Rotarians with our projects.
All in all the year 1982-83 was a most productive year
under the leadership of Bob Baird. Now as we enter the
new year under Kerry Freeman as, president, we look
forward to Sharing Rotary to Serve People.
Bill Skelton, President, Rotary International stated,
“Rotary is a great way to serve people. Rotarians know
that the best way to serve people is to help people help
themselves. By doing so, Rotarians can make a dif-
ference in their communities, vocations, and the world,
when they set their minds to it. When we have goals, we
meet them, and even go beyond. If there are people in
need in our communities and the world, we do something
about it. The lives of people are improved and enhanced
because there are Rotary Clubs”.
Of things we think, say or do
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3) Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concemed?
