B il The Luzerne County Sunday School Association is sponsoring a poster, essay and poetry contest inconjunction with the tion with the Pennsylvania State Sunday School Aso- ciation. The Luzerne County win- ners will go on to regional competition in an effort to place for a position in the state finals to be held Oct. 15 in West Middlesex, Pa. Any Sunday school child or youth from ages six through 19 may partici- pate. Contestants will be entered into age groups according to their age at the time they complete their entry. The four groupings are: ages 6-8; 9- 12; 13-15 and 16-19. Each grouping will run as a separate contest. The theme is ‘‘Sunday School Is...” Poster contestants can use the media of their choice, such as pencil, ink, magic marker, paint, col- lage, etc., with entries on poster board 14” x 22” either vertical or horizon- tal with the theme used somehwere on the poster. Essay entries will be accepted up to a 400 word limit, either handwritten or typed on one side of the paper only. Essays should contain the theme. Poetry entries will be accepted up to a maxi- mum of 24 lines, handwrit- ten or typed on one side of the paper and should con- tain the theme. All entries must be the work of one individual. The following information must accompany the poster, essay or poem in an evelope which can be alte tig esi eid o ‘the back of the entry: contestants’ name, address, telephone number, age, church name, sunday school supt. name, and sunday school supt. telephone number. The entries will be judged on their creativity, originality, and their effec- tive portrayal of the theme. A child or youth can enter any or all of the competitions, however, a separate entry blank should be completed for each entry. He developed “Window On the World’ in response to what he believes is limited knowledge of Western and non-Western civilization among American young people. The program will enable area youth to discover the world and its different peo-. ples as well as gain a sense of their own ances- tors who traveled so far to settle this country. The program will be presented a number of times from through March at College Misericordia in Dallas. It will be free to the public. Each session will open with the presentation of a folk tale which will reveal some key attitudes and values of the particular civilization. Silk Screening Johathon Valentine of Dallas gets hands-on experience with silk screening in College Misericordia’s Fine Arts Camp. The week-long camp offers children ages 5 to 12 a week of varied activities, including art projects, aerobics, creative movement and musical activities. Jonathan learned silk screen techniques from Paul Callahan of Calmar Specialities, who made a special presentation. Jonathan is the son of Jonathan and Alva Valentine.
