Joe and his late wife owned and operated Roman’s Cafe on the corner of Watkins and Grace Sts., Swoyersville where Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gavlick reside now. Joe was one of the top dart shooters in his day and was one of the pioneers of the Silver Spruce Rod and Gun Club. He is survived by a daughter, two grandchildren and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Nancy Hornick is going for the distinction. Nancy and her husband John of Watkins St., Swoyersville took in the July 3 and 4 games at the Yankee Stadium to see the games between the Boston Red Sox and the Yanks. John, who is a staunch Red Sox fan was in his glory on Sunday when the Sox crushed the Yanks but Monday was a different story as Dave Rhegetti pitched his no-hit, no-run game to lead the Yanks past the Sox and Nancy was in her glory. And to top it off, she got Rhegetti’s autograph. Following that game, the Hornicks went to see the big fireworks displa; sponsored by Macy’s Department Store and said they never saw anything like it. Nancy said that around 3 the Macy’s fireworks, it was like the finale all the way through. THER Honoring ‘Maxie’ Dallas Post/Jog Gula pitcher from 1962-1965. George J. Shendock, a teacher in the Wyoming Valley West School District, has retired after 36 years in the teach- ing profession. od Shendock was recently honored by his fellow teachers with a dinner at Magee’s Publick House in Dallas and was presented with a gift by the group. A native and lifelong resident of Swoyersville, Shendock began teaching in 1947 in the old high school on Hemlock St. in Swoyersville. There, he taught many subjects, including Span- ish and Latin and directed the High School Minstrel for several years. Shen- dock also served as assistant football and basketball coach, head baseball coach and Faculty Manager, a post he held for 20 years. Always interested in sports, Shendock played football at Scranton University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters’ Degree in Education. He then received a certif- icate in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg College. Upon graduating from college, Shendock played pro football with the Wilkes- Barre Panthers and basketball with-the Wilkes-Barre Recreation League. Shendock is also a former baseball and basketball coach, having partici- pated in the Knights of Columbus League. Shendock resides in Swoyersville with his wife, the former Dorothy Nemetz.
