Lady of The Eighth Annual Cub Scout Day Camp for the Mountain Pathfinder Dis- trict II is being held at Frances Slocum Park through July 15. The camp is for all Cub Scouts from Plymouth to W. Pittston and out to the Back Moun- tain. Activities are varied to give the boys a chance to improve all skills from swimming to archery fo able to work on awards or badges and all boys are awarded ‘a patch at. the conclusion of the camp. The Cub Scout Day Camps were started in 1975 by District Commis- sioner Nancy McDonald and a handful of volunteer helpers who pioneered the concept in this area. For the first years, the camps were held at the Country Club in Dallas but in order to make it more accessible they moved to Frances Slocum Park in 1979. This year’s camp direc: tor is Marge Griffin of West Pittston, whose task it is to arange the order of activities and to enlist the cooperation of those who come out to give various displays or information to the boys. The camp usually starts with an hour of swimming before the pool opens to the public. After this, the scouts are assigned to groups by age, with each group led by a Den Chief, (an older scout who per- forms this service as part of an award scheme). The den chief’s job is to see that his group moves from activity to activity and to assist the leader in the demonstration or activity at each place. Most of the activities take place in the lower part of the park near the lake. Activities have included archery lessons, demon- strations by the Trucks- ville Fire Dept., ‘K-9 Corps”, Judo lessons and ‘the Jaws of Life.” An important part of the program is making things as the Webelos (older cub scouts) have woodworking projects and the younger cubs make craft items out of natural things like pine cones. Each boy has at least one item to take home as a reminder of his week in camp. The camp will conclude with a cookout on Friday afternoon when all the scouts, their leaders and helpers gather for a social session. Badges and awards are presented and . quantities of hot dogs and watermelon are consumed. The day camp is an Cub Scouts to meet boys of their own ages from differ- ent areas and schools. ns Sia have drawn on experience of previous years to make it a week to be remem- bered. ERE
