What do Waco, Texas;
Hagerstown, Maryland;
and Kalamazoo, Michigan
have in common with
Wilkes-Barre? That’s
exactly what the Commit-
tee for Economic Growth
is assessing.
Fred Hartwigsen, Plan-
ning Task Force Chairman
of the Committee for Eco-
nomic Growth, recently
announced that the study
groups are completing
Element I of the Commu-
nity Assessments project.
In Element I, the Plan-
ning Task Force is study-
ing more than 30 specific
areas of the community
including education, hous-
ing, land resources, com-
munications, taxes and
labor. Each of these
groups were scheduled to
submit their reports by
late June.
Element 2 of the project,
which will begin shortly,
involves identifying other
areas which will provide a
basis for comparison and
evaluation.
The Wilkes-Barre/Wyo-
ming Valley’s characteris-
tics will be compared with
four cities in Pennsylvania
and 11 cities in other
states.
The areas in Pennsyl-
vania were selected
because of their size, loca-
tion, and potential as a
competitor for economic
development. The other
states were selected, using
the recently completed
study on the competitive
position of Pennsylvania
businesses undertaken for
the Pennsylvania Business
Council.
More than 350 individu-
als from throughout the
community are involved
with the Planning Task
Force. The Task Force has
as its goal the develop-
ment of a plan for the
economic revitalization of
the greater Wilkes-Barre
community.
