Heading up this year’s program will be Miss Cynthia Smith, a senior student at the University of North Alabama majoring in Music Education. Miss Smith is a native resident of Athens, Alabama. She will primarily focus on Youth Bible Study and Choral Programs for chil- dren and youth. _ The choir schedule for Sundasys, 6-6:30 p.m., 4 and 5 year olds; 6-6:45, 4-6 grades’ 6:45-7:30 p.m. 1-3 grades; 7:30-8:15 p.m., 7- 12 grades. Youth Bible Study will be held each Tuesday eve- ning at the church from 7-9 beginning July 5. For the first Major Youth Activity, the group will be joining the Youth ANT ER NAT at Wyoming Valley Baptist Church, Route 315, Wilkes- Barre, for a Musical Con- cert presented by a 42 member Youth Touring Choir, including a Hand- bell Choir, from Bir- mingham, Alabama. Planned for July 12 is a Children’s Day Outing at Frances Slocum Park. A Teen Girls Slumber party is planned for July 19. On July 29, Wyoming Valley Baptist Youth and Dallas Baptist Youth will com- bine with other area churches for a Youth Sing- spirational Service which will be held at Wyoming Valley Baptist Church, Route 315, Wilkes-Barre. The summer activities will climax with a Youth Trip to Hershey Park on Aug. 4 followed by Associational Youth Camp, Aug. 8-12. The Children’s Vacation Bible School will be July 18-29 each dat at 9:30-12. Any young person in the Back Mountain Area is welcome to attend these activities. Cynthia Smith has had previous experience in working with Youth and Music Programs in other churches. She is a Student Summer Missionary with the Southern Baptist Con- vention. A Student Summer Mis- sionary is one who is a college-age Christian worker who volunteers their summer to work any- where in the U.S. where they are needed. Directed by John Miliauskas, it climaxed its 1982-83 competition season recently with a big win in Sherburne, N.Y. at the 34th Annual Pageant of Bands. : Three first place tro- phies for Parade, Field Show and Field Drum Major as well as a second place trophy for Indoor Color Guard were added to the already bulging trophy cases at the Lake-Lehman High School. John Head- man is Drum Major. Forty one bands participated in the all-day event. This outstanding march- ing unit totaled 49 trophies just this season with 42 of the 49 being first place awards. Over the years, the band has accumulated 500 tro- phies. Director Miliauskas credits the school district for their contributions, the community, all band sup- porters, the band parents and the real heroes - the band students - for the most fantastic season ever. Miliauskas stated, ‘‘It was truly a banner year. This is a tribute to the school and the commu- nity." Following the Sherburne event, the band was treated to dinner at the Canasawacta Country Club by the Band Sponsors Association, where the band officers were elected for the next school year. They are Karen Holmgren, president; Marijean Kon- opke, vice-president; Bob Sando, secretary and Vir- ginia Yatsko, treasurer. The executive commit- tee will be Joan Drobnicki, Mike Annetta, Doug Ide, Missy Hontz and Darin Ide. Appointed Color Guard co-captains were Rick Titus and Ray Jones - rifles, and Paula Rem- plewicz and Cathy Clamar - silks. Newly elected officers of the Band Sponsors Asso- ciation are Dan Hudzik, president; Larry Sorber, vice president; Joyce Youren, recording secre- tary; Marlene Konopke, corresponding secretary; Karen Lubinski, treasurer and Nancy Stark, assistant treasurer. Thirty-nine high school students from around the world will pay a four-day visit to Dallas. Due to arrive on July 3, the stu- dents will stay with local families and participate in a number of special events arranged by the Dallas Chapter of the American Field Service. The students are part of a group of more than 3,300 teenagers traveling across the U.S. on two week bus trips. The trips are part of the end of stay program of AFS students who have spent the past year living with families and attend- ing school in the U.S. Special events planned during the student’s stay Orchestra Awards Orchestra Awards were recently presented to four students at Wyoming Valley West High School. Marzen Memorial-Music Award. r Parent Council Meets The Lake-Lehman E.C.IA. Chapter I Parent Advisory Council spon- sored a ‘Make and Take’ night recently. The par- ents of children in the Dis- trict had an opportunity to make reading and math games and activities to help their children main- tain these skills over the summer. : There were many exam- ples for the ‘parents to choose from on various levels of difficulty. The examples were made by members of the E.C.I.LA- Chapter 1 staff and the Lehman-Jackson P.T.A. mothers. The parents were: aided in the selection of projects that would benefit their children by members. of the E.C.I.LA. Chapter I staff. ' The staff also helped: with = the selection of proper materials. All the materials needed to com- plete the projects were provided by the school dis- trict. The projects were made and taken home, ready for immediate use. The E.C.ILA. Chapter I Advisory Council also pro-- vided refreshments. Those parents, who were able to attend, felt that it was a very successful evening and hoped that it would be continued in the future. Receives Trophy : : Mark Parrish, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Parrish of Shavertown recently was awarded a trophy for finishing third place at the Space Rocket Derby held at the West Pittston Armory in April.
