water people and Luzerne
County’s recreational
waters offer nearby op-
portunities to swim, sail,
fish, water ski or scuba
dive.
There are more than
2,000 acres of lake waters
and 82 miles of trout
stocked streams in the
county.
Gasoline powered craft
are permitted on Harveys
Lake, Lake Nuangola,
Lake Silkworth and North
lake with a 60 horsepower
restriction at Lilly lake.
Lake Nuangola is private,
however fire lanes have
been used by visitors to
gain access to the waters.
Engines up to 10 hor-
sepower are permitted at
Francis Walter Dam.
Other popular county
lakes include: Lake Jean,
Bryants Pond, Sylvan
Lake, Lake Rose, Moon
Lake, Frances Slolcum,
‘Hidden Lake, Lake
Blytheburn, Crystal lake,
Penn Lake, Ice Lake,

Harveys Lake is known
for variety; offering water
sports, an amusement
park, camping,
restaurants and nightspots
which make it one of the
most complete recreation
areas in the state.
Harveys Lake is a
natural, spring-fed lake -
the largest natural lake in
Pennsylvania. A nine mile
shore road surrounding the
lake offers a scenic drive
while providing access for
boating, water skiing,
scuba diving and swim-
ming. Year round fishing is
also enjoyed at Harveys
Lake; stocking and an
access area are provided
by the Pennsylvania Fish
Commission. One of the
most popular attractions at
Harveys Lake is Don
Hanson's Amusement
Park, camping facilities
with free admission and
parking.

Whitewater excitement
is just minutes away at the
Lehigh River Gorge near
White Haven.

The County boasts three
golf courses of champion-
ship calibre: Wilkes-Barre
Golf Club at Trailwood,
Bear Creek; Sugarloaf Golf
Club, Sugarloaf and
Edgewood in the Pines,
Drums.
Other excellent public
courses inlcude: Twin
Oaks Golf Course, Orange;
Lehman Golf Club, Leh-
man; Muhlenburg Golf
Course, Muhlenburg;
Happy Valley Golf Course,
Exeter and Hollenback
Golf Course, Wilkes-Barre.

Spirited dance, exciting
music and
costuming add sparkle to
the Luzerne County Folk
Festival. Set for October
20-23 at the 109th Field
Artillery Armory,
Kingston, the Festival is a
celebration of the region’s
ethnic heritage and
traditions.
Ethnic food specialties of
more than 15 lands are a
major Festival attraction
plus local folk performers
provide a continuous enter-
tainment schedule. The
events section of this
tabloid features a variety
of festivals which focus on
the national heritage of
church members. In
October, the Folk Festival
combines the nationalities
of the region in a four day
presentation of excellence
and diversity.
