By LEE L. RICHARDS rm er According to a recent recruiting survey by Ama- teur Wrestling News, four teams from the Eastern Wrestling League wound up in the top 20. Penn State was fifth, Clarion ninth, Bloomsburg 1ith and West Virginia 20th. Bloom had an exceptional year according to Coach Roger Sanders. The Huskies landed one of the top prospects from PA in Bruce Wallace. Former Lake-Lehman standouts Rick and Rocky Bonomo will be ready to challenge this season after sitting out last year. Both were State champs for the Black Knights in 1981. They'll compete at 118 and 126 pounds. Penn State Coach Rich Lorenzo continues to build the Nittany Lions into a powerhouse in the East. They again inked some quality people in New York champ Dan Mayo (177 or 190), New Jersey champ John Place (190) and PIAA Champ Scott Pifer (126). Clarion signed Phil Mary, three-time PIAA champ and considered one of the top 20 wrestlers in the nation. West Virginia’s prize catch is Erie Tech’s Craig Costello, another PIAA champ. He'll compete at 167 pounds. Pitt coach Randy Stottle- myer told me last week, “Overall, I'd have to say the EWL signed some real quality wrestlers and we also got some quality. Bloom had an amazing recruiting year and they’ll have some good young- sters ready that sat out last year, too.” According to the AWN Mayo was rated the top 177-pounder in the country, while Wallace was the No. 2 wrestler at this weight class. Mary is the second best 112-pounder, while Pifer is considered No, 3 at 126, Place fourth at 190 and Costello fifth at 167. Another Clarion recruit, Bob Helderman, Lake- wood, Ohio, was ‘sixth at 126 pounds. Meanwhile, reading about college basketball recently it looks similar to players transferring from one program to another, Too many prima donnas. Mark Jarolin told me about his title go in the MeCarthy golf tourney last Sunday at Crestwood’s pe Matt LaVigna’s graduation party. Mark and his brother, Dennis, were five under par after 17 holes, but the team of Joe Skla- ney and Tim Burns were ‘eight under. Mark said Burns was brilliant. Match play in golf is a funny game. While you're knock- ing your brains out with a five-under score, folks in the other bracket could: be winning their match with a one-over par. I like medal play for 54 holes. I've seen too many fluky things happen in match play and we have too many match play events around this area. Elsewhere, the annual UNICO All-Star football game is tonight. As usual, the folks running the game have done a sorry job with the promotion and public- ity. I was appalled to look at last year’s program and see the game director didn’t even have the schools listed for the par- ticipants. There's too many chiefs and not enough Indians in that outfit. Because of the talent on the East side, I'd venture to say they’ve got to rate a two-touchdown favorite. Remember last year the West was favored but couldn’t muster an air game and the East went on to win? For the West to win, they’ll have to throw the ball effectively and control the football. West has some fire-power on offense, too. Crestwood grid Coach Sam Elias will be working at Pitt’s’ annual football camp for a week this summer. Sam is delighted to have 20 of his players headed for the Steel City, too. 11 cerning the U.S. Open: since 1934, only three play- ers have ‘ever won the Masters and Open titles in the same year. The Great Ben Hogan did it twice, Arnie Palmer once and Jack Nicklaus once. The Masters began in ’34. It’s almost impossible to win back majors with the cali- ber of competition on the tour today. There's just too many super players.
