Both high school stu- dents won first place for their work in the Pennsyl- vania State A.C.E. Compe- tition and fifth and sixth places in the recent Inter- national A.C.E. Show in Texas. There are also lots of familiar scenes, like Erick Barrett’s painting of the covered bridge at Ricketts Glen and Marge Kline's painting of Sylvan Lake. Perhaps the most unusual in this - category is Ann Searfoss’ painting of the oe Engagement? ‘old Carverton Mill which dam at Frances Slocum State Park was built. Mrs. Searfoss recreated the old mill scene working from old photographs given to her by her family and friends. For just plain artistic fun, there is a working clock wired into the back of a handpainted frying pan which is the work of Henry Switzer, a retired gentleman from Falls who has also painted a scenic painting of a Raggedy Ann doll also hangs in the gal- lery, as does a snow scene painted in oil by Emily Siegal of Harveys Lake who has had several of her works on exhibit at the Gracie Square Art Show in New York City. Sue Hand, who has over 150 students both young and old in her art clases, says she teaches people “to paint things they feel strongly about, to paint This philosophy is reflected in the local farm scene painted by Stefanie Michael of Dallas who is taking the painting show- ing where she lives to Eng- land to give to her grand- sx Wedding? parents. Another example of painting what you care about are the intricate pencil sketches of animals done by eighth grader Karen Robinson of Warren Drive, Dallas who hopes to be a veterinarian and spend her life working with animals. On the purely inspira- scenes painted by Myrtle Elliot of Harveys Lake who was told after suffer- ing a stroke that she would never paint and never drive again. The fact that Mrs. Elliot’s paintings done in the art classes that she drives to every week, are hanging in the Art Show should be an exam- ple to every potential artist who may wish to see their own paintings hang- ing in this show next year. seen Sue Hand, JUNE 17, 18 & 19 Grounds Open Friday 6 P.M. 8-11 P.M.
