event, invites anyone interested in
participating to contact him at 639-

Back Mountain Baseball has out-
grown its present facilities. The
practice facilities are scattered
throughout the boroughs and town-
ships that comprise the league and
are as far apart as Kingston Twp.
and Lehman. The major league
teams have been looking for a
larger portion of away games this
year to make up for the lack of
facilities.
The present fields in Dallas Twp.
are in use every night during the
season and all day on Saturdays.
This year’s weather has also played
havoc with many of the practice
fields as there has been an enor-
mous amount of surface water on
them. ;
These are some of the problems
facing Back Mountain baseball as
the teams are well into the 1983
season. The answer, it seems is
near at hand - or is it?
The Little League Acquisition
Committee has found one suitable
site in the Back Mountain and it
looks as though land belonging to
the Dallas School District may be
just the solution.
At a meeting held June 9, the
Little League met with representa-
tives from the school district and
Tom Doughton from Smith, Miller
Engineering. Doughton explained
the physical aspects of creating
baseball fields on the land which is
adjacent to the Dallas High School
Building.
The school district and the
Department of Agriculture have
arranged to alleviate a drainage
problem as well as the rough grad-
ing of the area. This year’s high
rainfall had highlighted the surface
water problem which would need to
be corrected initially.
However, after this work is car-
ried out by Marines in August and
September, there will still be a
great deal of expensive work that
must be done.

the two buildings, both of which are
in residential neighborhoods, has
been a question repeatedly discus-
sedsince the Dallas School Board
voted to close the schools for eco-
nomic reasons.
Relocating the library to the
former school building would
obviously provide a great deal more
space than is presently available in
the two converted wooden houses on
Main Street that constitute the Back
Mountain Memorial Library. If tite
move were to take place it would
also be possible to house both the
Childrens’ Section and the Main
Library under one roof and make an
auditorium available for special cul-
tural events.

fields, it is estimated that the cost
of constructing one field according
fo standards set by Little League
Headquarters in Williamsport would
be clost to $100,000. At least one
field must be constructed according
tc these standards to enable the
league to grow in terms of game
status.
The costs, as they stand, seem to
be somewhat high, however, sugges-
tions were made as to how the
league could form a legal associa-
tion to include all the townships and
boroughs. This type of association
would allow the organization to
apply for federal grants. At present,
all community development monies
are committed for the next few
years and the aim is to begin
construction on the fields as soon as
possible.
The school district has already
iven their go-ahead for the utiliza-
ion of the land as it would be an all-
around benefit for baseball and
softball in the community. Joe
O’Donnell, representative for the
school district, suggested the league
look into the forming of the neces-
sary legal association.
It was noted that construction of
one field should begin with the aim
of having it in use next season. This,
however, would create the disad-
vantage of splitting the games by
age groups. A split such as this
would be only temporary and would
probably be outweighed by the long
term goal.
Doughton pointed out that resur-
facing work was already underway
on the Dallas Junior High School
track. Tex Wilson reported that
work is being done as a joint
venture as the school board is pro-
viding the labor and the township is
providing the equipment. It is possi-
ble the same type of agreement
would be possible for the construc-
tion of the baseball fields. \
tic note as Back Mountain Baseball
is now taking the initial steps neces-
sary te acquire new fields.
