RICHARDS When has the Eastern grid ranks turned out so many talented prospects for the NFL? I can’t recall two Eastern quarterbacks ever being drafted in the first round. Penn State’s Todd Blackledge and Pitt’s Dan Marino both went on round one, along with 'PSU’s brilliant runner Curt Warner and Pitt’s rugged OT Jimbo Covert. As a collegiate performer I gotta rate Warner as the best back I've seen: perform for the Nit- tany Lions since Lenny Moore. Meanwhile, the biggest surprise of the draft for me was Pitt’s Tom Lewis, a defensive back going on round one. Heck, last year at this time when I was putting together my All-East team for Eastern Football, Lewis was not evenmentioned in the Panther camp. He sure did mature over the season to catch the eye of the pro scouts. One player I'm delighted to see go high was Rutgers’ DT Bill Pickel. He's a young man I've followed closely brilliantly against Alabama. He was one of my two-time All-East choices and went on ‘the second round to the Raiders. I still can’t get over the excitement the NFL draft generates all across the country. It’s a happening! I've been telling grid buffs for sometime that Mark Duda of Maryland (former Valley West star) would go in the first five rounds. Mark will make it with the Cards simply because of his dedication and mental toughness. He can play! ESPN did a superb jpb in covering the draft throughout the day. I saw some of the action and enjoyed it im- mensely, especially the interviews with the fans. After i all they are the ones that make the sport No. 1. 1 like the Bears’ selections. Coach Mike Ditka landed two jewels in Covert of Pitt and Willie Gault of Ten nessee. Willie is the quickest player entering the NFL. He’s the NCAA sprint and hurdles champ. I couldn’t understand the Colts not making a deal for the rights to John Elway after the Stanford star made it perfectly clear he wanted no part of Baltimore. I gotta: believe he'll still play football. A trade of some sort will | be made, but the Colts don’t have a lot to hang their hat on at this stage. REPUBLICANS!! CHARLES (Chuck) JESSE} Lever No. 6 | Supervisor - Jackson Twp. Five Eastern players going on the first round was delightful for Eastern fans, Washington, USC and Arizona State had a bunch of people drafted. Washington was a solid team, but it kinda: makes you wonder about the other two? If there was no USFL and I was doing some selecting, I'd have taken Grambling’s Trumaine Johnson, Curt Warner or Kelvin Bryant of North Carolina. Another team which added some quality help is the Packers. Perhaps the Chargers got the best collection of athletes for their sorry defense. Penn State wrestling coach Rich Lorenzo told me last week he’s signed two schoolboy mat stars in New York state champ Dan Mayo and New Jersey champ John Place. Mayo is expected to challenge at 177, while Place will compete at 190 pounds. Pennsylvania champ Scott Pifer (119 lbs.) is also headed for the Eastern Mat Poll champs. ‘Said Torenzo, “I feel we signed three outstanding youngsters that will make an impact on our program before they graduate: All three are real competitors and know how to win,” Clarion has won the recruiting war for two-time PA champ Phil Mary. Trout Stocking The Pennsylvania Fish Commission has announced its trout stocking schedule for the week of May 2. In Luzerne County, the following bodies of wa ter will be stocked: 'Bowmans Creek, Irena Lake Mountain Spring Lak ¢ Nescopeck Creek and Little Wap wa llopen Creek. In Wyoming County there will be no stocking program this week. Route 315; Wilkes Plaza - Behind Mr. Donut, Wilkes-Barre, Phone 824-0541 OPEN DAILY 10-6 Mon., Tues.
