a BY JOAN KINGSBURY During the past few years, couponing and refunding have become a national pastime. ~ According to statistics, out of the 102 billion coupons distributed ‘in 1982, almost a billion dollars were returned to the consumer. Bonnie Turchin of Ceasetown an avid couponer and refunder, has been saving money in this way for the past nine years. : Bonnie says that a shopper can save between $10 and $15 per week on a grocery order utilizing coupons and shopping where double or triple coupons are offered. Bonnie - never without her shoe box full of coupons filed alpha- betically. For the past four years Bonnie has been able to feed her family of four spending $60 per week, with little variation in that weekly price. When refunding, Bonnie says that saving all brand labels is a must. Working with a partner makes things easier. Storage can be a problem, as all labels must be filed to be used efficiently. Getting friends and members to save their labels and unwanted coupons is a great help, too. One could say that Bonnie is an expert on this subject. She has given talks at the Lake-Lehman Junior High, Lehman Jackson Elementary School and Lake-Noxen Elementary School on this subject. She will be speaking for the Ross PTO meeting in the near future. Feedback con- cerning her talks has been good. One question often asked is ‘“Where do I get the coupons?’ Bonnie suggests clipping - them from the papers. Sunday newspaper supplements, magazines, swapping and from Carol Wright, a company that sends coupon packets through the mail. Refunding magazines such as Refund Digest and Moneytalk make it possible to exchange coupons through the mail. Bonnie admits that refunding and couponing takes a lot of time, but can result in substantial savings. According to an article in Martin Sloan’s column, the average coupon clipper saves $200 to $400 a year. That's enough for a nice day trip or some other luxury item. ] Bonnie, her husband Edward and their children Pamela, 13 and Eddie, 8 live in Cease- town. Both Bonnie and Edward are originally from Hanover Twp. A graduate of Wilkes College, Bonnie is a substitute teacher. Pamela attends Lake- Lehman Junior High School while Eddie is a student at Lehman- Jackson = Elementary School. Bonnie has provided our readers with some great recipes. Bonnie’s Meatballs and Macaroni Salad both make large quantities, and are per- fect for weddings, showers and graduation parties. The meatballs are moist and tasty. The macaroni salad’s special dressing of Miracle Whip, Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk and vinegar not only gives the salad a good flavor but lasts longer than the usual dressing. For dessert lovers Bonnie has two special treats, Yummy Pistachio Dessert, a divine com- bination of cream cheese, pistachio pudding and Cool Whip, and Peanut BONNIE’S MEATBALLS 10 Ib. gr. chuck 2-15 oz. containers Italian bread crumbs 1 t/club soda 3 /med. onions, chopped fine 5 eggs, well beaten garlic salt, to taste garlic powder, to taste season-all, to taste course black pepper, to taste a 1 c.
