Wilkes-Barre Fats “Sports BY LEE L. RICHARDS CLIPBOARD NOTES: Couldn’t understand why Nick He did a splendid job with the program and had the Argents competitive the last two seasons. He had a very capable assistant in Bill Jones. I wonder if he’ll be given a shot at guiding the program? --Two college roundball teams I enjoy seeing beat are UCLA and Kentucky. I've always contended the Bruins did some shady things and the NCAA could have hung them for the humpty-dumpty things that went on the last dozen years. Joe E. Hall simply has the best team money can buy, but the NCAA wouldn’t dare touch the Kittens. I’ve always had a mad-on for those two. --Look for Lake-Lehman’s volleyball team to make a strong bid for the District crown. Coach John Baronoski has built a very competitive program for the Black Knights. ~Glancing through USA Today Girls round-ball A-A team I couldn’t help but miss Dallas cager kathy Walsh. Heck, she’s a player! --Pitt and Penn State will be starting spring grid drills shortly and both teams must come out of the 30 days of drill with a competent field general. Right now, I've gotta give the nod to the Nittany Lions as the best team in the East and after more evaluation could remain in my Super Seven. -My three choices for All-American grid laurels from the East for the coming season are: Pitt's, Bill Fralic; Penn State’s, Mark Robinson and Navy’s Andy Ponseigo, country in my book. Robinson is a sticker from safety for the Lions. --One college sport for which I've never heard of a school being put on probation by the NCAA is wrestling. There are some schools that do anything they want, too. It’s strange that both Tom Osborne of Nebraska and St. Joe of Penn State voted against the Kickoff Classic in the Meadowlands at the NCAA Convention in January. But, with the mention of a half million bucks apiece, both reluctantly accepted the big bucks. —According to reports I've received, Irem Temple's Board of Governors is finally accepting some of the requests made by the Golf Association to make needed Volle yball improvements to the course. Tom Gauntlett, Jr. made some solid recommendations at a recent meeting. --Dave Fagula and a group of friends attended the big fight in Scranton on Sunday. Champ Larry Holmes really did the area a favor by defending his crown here, especially with recognition we got. —-How about Chris ‘“Endzone’” Kerias judging one of the prelims? Chris is becoming a pretty fair ring judge. --Had a nice conversation last week with Tennessee Coach John Majors. He invited me down for spring drills. I'm excited about the Vols’ opener with the Pitt Panthers on Sept. 3. I've already got a group heading for Knoxville for the clash. I can’t lose that weekend as both are favorites of mine. John told me he’s spent the last couple of weeks gathering some passing tips by visiting the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. He was looking forward to spending some time last week with Hoosier Coach Bob Knight when IU was in Knoxville for the NCAA Regionals. Received a letter last week from former Lake- Lehman Coach Tom Hisiro. He’s doing well at Can- nonsburg. He’s got a top-notch grid prospect this coming season and wanted to alert me about him for “Eastern Football” magazine. Tom’s name was mentioned for the Abington Heights post. —-Perhaps one of the better local prospects for next season is Berwick QB Joe Orlando. He’s got the quick- ness to attract a lot of scouts. One thing about a George Curry QB, they all possess that “on the field” awareness of taking a broken play and turning it into a long gainer, -According to reports I've received, Irem Temple's Board of Governors is finally accepting some of the requests made by the Golf Association to make needed improvements to the course.
