The Harveys Lake
Police Department has
three engravers to loan to
citizens wishing to
identify personal
belongings. The
engravers were sent to
the community from the
state Commission on
Crime and Delinquency
as part of a ‘Crime
Watch” package.
Mayor Frank Picchi
explained the package
includes informational
leaflets and window
stickers, which will be
distributed to
homeowners. He said the
“Crime Watch’’ program
at the lake is still being
developed, regardless of
the fact that he has run
into difficulty setting up a
police training session.
Officials at the lake
were recently notified
that the commission
would not be conducting
the session bcause an
insufficient number of law
enforcement people had
signed up to attend.
Picchi said he was told he
needed 10 such persons,
and had received com-
mittments from 14. At this
point, the commission
informed him the
minimum number was 20.
When he questioned its
reasoning, the com-
mission then said 15 would
do.
Picchi has forwarded
letters to State
Representative George
Hasay and State Sen.
HELEN FREDERICK
and LINDA GREY were
among over 140 Luzerne
, County residents who
+attended three candle-
wicking classes recently
in Hazleton and Wilkes-
Barre, sponsored by The
Penn State University
Cooperative ~~ Extension
Service,
+» Instructions were given
on selecting candle-
wicking supplies, making
the colonial knot and
finishing the design to use
as a pillow, sachet, wall-
hanging or picture.
The classes were taught
by Barbara Kosakowski,
extension home econmist;
assisted by Mary Ann
Anme Office Columbus Ohio
Frank O’Connell
requesting tgheir
assistance in bringing the
session to the lake. “We
are determined to
organize a neighborhood
watch program here,” he
said. “And we'll do it with
or without a training
session.”
Picchi noted Police
Chief Lionel Bulford has
suggested taking some of
those residents = ex-
pressing interest in
serving as block captains
for an informal training
tour in the police cruiser.
Local police would
provide tips on what to
look for and how to
respond in case police
assistance is needed.
