Wilkes-Barre Fats Welcome Hazleton *® BY LEE L. RICHARDS CLIPBOARD NOTES: --Hazleton will be a welcome addition to the Wyoming ‘ Valley Football Conference. I chatted recently with Coach Dale Stewart and he feels he’s got the Moun- taineer program headed in the right direction. They could be competitive in 1984. --Remember former Lake-Lehman grid coach Tom Hisiro?. I heard he was in the running for the recently- filled Abington Heights job in the Big 11. It seams Tom’s school in Western Pennsylvania reneged on some of the promises it made and he wants out. --Preposterous, is the only way I can describe Wilkes’ reasons for unloading roundball coach Jim Atherton. It was strictly a humpty-dumpiy move. Let’s face it, he was one of their own and they never gave him a chance (two years) to get his own type of players involved in the program. Jim's days were numbered since AD John Reese didn’t want him in the first place. Wilkes’ whole athletic program has suffered for the sake of the wrestling program which hasn’t set the world on fire in the EIWA or on a national level. The Colonels score a handful of points at the NCAAs on a good year. Jim Atherton had too much style for Wilkes in the first place. --Why is Williamsport shot-down each year it applies to the Wyoming Valley Conference? Maybe some local coaches are ducking the competition the Millionaires would provide? --1 gotta believe it’s only a matter of time before we see George Curry’s Berwick Bulldogs playing locally. --Before anyone runs out and buys any championship jackets for the 1986 Dallas basketball team, let's keep things low-key. This Dallas freshman cage squad has some ability. With Coach Clarence Ozgo getting the program established, plus doing some coaxing and shaping, the Mountaineers should become competitive in time. -Sorry to hear Lake-Lehman grid boss Mark Kirk is a mite under the weather. -One rumor making the rounds on the West Side has Jim Fennell out as the Spartans’ head grid coach and Big Lou Michaels coming in to pick up the reins. Every spring the Fennell rumors seem to make the rounds. --Received a call last week from coaching pal John Brunner, formerly of the Detroit Lions. John is now coaching in Green Bay with Bart Starr’s Packers. --‘‘Coach Starr called me a couple of weeks ago and inquired if I'd be interested in coming to Green Bay. I went up for an interview and accepted on the spot,” said Brunner. as ® Q looking forward to working here. Starr is a class in- dividual. If we can keep our folks healthy, we’ll have a good football team. Injuries to some front-liners have really hurt the Packers.” John’s son, Scott, is the QB with the Giants. Big John has never been one to brag, but he said, “Scott is getting @reiier every year.”’ I'm elated with the success enjoyed by both of the Brunners. » ~I’'m heading to the NCAA Wrestling Championships in ®'Oklahoma City this week. I sure hope the Eastern wrestlers hit their full potential and bring back some hardware. I'll give you my impressions next wek. --They hadn't played a game, but the oddsmakers came out with a betting line for the USFL last week. Taking with some NFL folks, most believe the new grid loop is going to make it. I'd like to see it, simply because there are a lot of good football players around.
