80TH BIRTHDAY--Mrs. Helen Dennis of 15 Jay St.,
Swoyersville recently celebrated her 80th birthday. This
fine lady was honored with a birthday party by her
children at Perugino’s Restaurant in Luzerne. Those in
attendance besides the guest of honor were Eleanor and
Joe “Red’’ Cheskiewicz, Helen and Vince Dennis, Cindy
Dennis, Dolores Fetchko and guest, Claire Bernoski,
Leonard Dennis and grandson, Joseph Cheskiewicz Jr.
Mrs. Dennis received many cards and well wishes from
her family and friends. She is very active and likes to
take mini trips. Congratulations to a terrific woman.

CHACKO’S' PREP
MIXED BOWLING
LEAGUE
. The weatherman
prevented the boys and
girls from bowling in the
Jerry Lewis Bowl-A-Thon
to benefit, Muscular
Dystrophy Association.
This is the kids’ big day,
they, the kids go out and
get sponsor’s who, will
pay the children one cent
to five cents or even more
for each pin. Last year the
league was one of the best
in raising money for
Jerry’s Kids, this year the
coaches Nancy Wilcox
and JoAnn Stefanko are
hoping for the same
results or better, because
the kids are better
bowlers this year.
This year the
Association Tournament
will be held at Stanton
Lanes, Wilkes-Barre,
March 12. Last year we
had a couple teams make
it to the state finals, also
one of the senior boys,
made it to the national
finals. Nancy and JoAnn
will be at the lanes rooting
for the Prep Mixed
Leaguers to go all the way
to the finals. The parents
are all behind the ‘boys
and girls from Chacko’s
Lanes. The public is in-
vited to see the young-
sters in action at Chacko’s
Lanes every Saturday
morning, and get to
Stanton Lanes March 12 to
see their children bowl
with the best from other
bowling houses.
The Confraternity of
Christian Mothers of Holy
Trinity Parish of Hughes
St., Swoyersville will
meet this Sunday, Feb. 27,
at 7:15 p.m. in the school
auditorium.

the 9 a.m. Mass. Msgr.

Twenty-one grade 9
students of Wyoming
Valley West High School
have been awarded
Certificates of Merit for
having scored in the 90th
or higher percentile
nationally in the National
Educational Dévelopment
Test. The NEDT battery
is used to measure broad
aspects of students’
development and to
compare each one’s
development with his or
her current potential for
achievement.
The general test con-
sists of six tests—-the test
of learning ability and
five tests of educational
development, English
usage, mathematics
usage, social studies
reading, natural sciences
reading, and word usage.
In addition to a score on
measure of performance
on all five educational
development tests
provides an index of
overall educational
development.
The NEDT program has
four objectives, to help
students better un-
derstand their academic
strengths and
weaknesses," Stor “help
teachers and counselors
better understand the
instructional and
guidance needs of in-
dividual students, to help
school administrators
better understand the
strengths and weaknesses
of their school curriculum
and to help school per-
sonnel identify
academicall’ talented
students who should be
encouraged to extend

her presence felt at St.
Joseph’s Lady Hawks,
Philadelphia just as she
did at Bishop O’Reilly
High four years ago.
Carol is a candidate for
All american academic
honors. She recently set a
new Lady Hawk scoring
mark by hitting for 36
points against Princeton.
She is a senior guard-
forward and hoping to
lead the Lady Hawks into
the "Atlantic Conference
playoffs.
Carol has 874 points and
has five more regular
season games to play. She
will be shooting for the
1000 or better marks She
scored 1,472 at Bishop
O'Reilly.
We’ll be looking for-
ward to seeing her on TV
in the playoffs.

American Red Cross,
Wyoming Valley Chapter,
announced the scheduling
of a course to train Water
Safety instructors. These
instructors will then be
qualified to teach all Red
Cross swimming courses
from beginner through
advanced lifesaving.
Those interested in taking
‘this course must be 17-
years old and hold a
current certificate in ad-
vanced lifesaving.
The class will meet at
the Wyoming Valley West
High School pool, Tuesday
and Wednesday evenings,
from 7-10 p.m. The course
will start on March 1 and
run through April 13.
There will be a holiday
break scheduled for the
convenience of the group.

Assistance Program.
The Luzerne County
lawmaker noted that 953
low-interest loans totaling
$24,202,727 have been
company
defaulted on a loan. The
loans are provided at two
percent annual interest
primarily to replace
outmoded and. unsafe
equipment or buildings.
According. to Coslett,
