Seton Catholic trailed
throughout most of the
game with Dallas Friday
night but rallied in the
fourth quarter to outscore
the Mounts 20-11 and cop a
60-57 win.
The Eagles trailed 46-40
going into the final period
but Mike Farrell scored
nine of his 18 points and
Fran Barlik connected for
a game score of 19 points.
Barlik did some stellar
long range shooting which
kept the Eagles in the
game and broke their
five-game losing streak.
Dave Thomas and Tim
ve collected 14 points
each. Thomas put four
through the nets from the
field and hit 6-6 from the
foul line. Grove hit 2-2
from the line and put six
good ones through the
nests from the field. Ed
Gorey hit for 10 points,
four goals from the floor
and 2-2 from the free
stripe. Steve Thomas
added up 11, putting in
four shots from the field
and dumping in 3-4 from
the line.
The teams played even
in the first quarter, en-
ding 12-12 but Dallas out-
scored the Eagles 16-13 in
the second for a 28-25 lead
at halftime. The Moun-
taineers pulled in front 46-
40 going into the final
frame when Farrell,
Barlik and Jim Tippett

Most local grid fans were still puzzled last week over
the recent departure of the Jets by Coach Walter
Michaels. I learned first-hand from a very reliable
source that an incident after the loss to the Dolphins
triggered Walter's ouster.
Here’s what supposedly happened. The Jets had a
charter plane and it was only a little over half-filled for
the return flight to New York.
Michaels had some members of his family and several
friends in Miami. Since there were so many empty seats
he asked permission from Jet prexy Jim Kensel if his
little party could return with the team? The Jets’ boss
flatly refused Michaels’ request stating: “This Biope is
for the team and official party.”
Being a notoriously hard loser, Michaels didn’t take oo
kindly to Kensel’s remarks.
On the flight back Michaels was still bitter over the
sloppy conditions of the field, especially the fact the
Dolphins didn’t have the surface covered at all before the
game.
As the story goes, Michaels made some bitter remarks.
Kensel told Michaels to show some class. He also made a
snide remark about Swoyersville and the mentality of
this area.
Michaels then allegedly went after Kensel and several
coaches had to separate the two men.
That was Michaels’ down fall.
It was an obvious power play by another no-neck and
the man who built the Jets in his tough and competitive
image is out of a job.
Professional sports is strictly a business.
CLIPBOARD NOTES:
Coaches Clinic International was held at the Cross-
gates last week and Director Jerry Preschutti has the
popular football confab in high gear...Peter Adonizio,
Chuck Adonizio, and Dr. Gerry Gibbons hosted a little
party for Pitt Coach Foge Fazio and assistant Andy
Urbanic after both lectured...Dallas Coach Ron Rybak
got to meet the Pitt coaches and socialized with some of
the Panther backers...Former Dallas boss Jack Jones
also dropped in to visit.
GAR Coach Charlie Fick spent sometime with Urbanic
getting tips on the Panther passing game...George
Curry, the head Bulldog at Berwick, confided he’s still
perturbed over the bad press his players received from
local media after losing in playoffs. George makes no
bones about it his team could be better this season.
Wyoming Sem’s Marv Antinnes and Gary Vanderburg
really haven't received the recognition they deserve for
splendid coaching jobs they’ve done. Gary ranks with the
best roundball coaches in this end of the state. He's also a
very solid grid coach.
Meanwhile, Coach Rybak told me he’s already got his
Mountaineers on an off-season weight program in
preparation for some spring drills. He’s got the program
headed in the right direction.
From what I gathered talking with Curry and his top

assistant, Jerry Little, the Bulldogs would welcome an

The Coaches’ International Football Seminar has to be
one of the top attractions locally.
Both Coaches Fazio and Urbanic had a heap of praise
for the clinic and the manner in which Preschutti has it
organized.
Several. New Jersey schoolboy coaches informed me
Pitt signed the premier player from their state in DE
Stan Woods.
Former Lake-Lehman mat star Jack Davis was elated
with Clarion’s romp in Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Tournament. The Golden Eagles set a record
with seven individual champions and 163 team points.
“We just picked up early momentum and it carries us
through the two-day event. I don’t believe we’ve wrestled
any better this season,’’ Davis said. He’s been involved in
a bunch of tournament titles as a wrestler and assistant
coach with Clarion. Davis is interested in GAR’s Tony
Tolbert.
As predicted here several weeks go, Penn State QB
Todd Blackledge announced he’s going to turn pro and
pass on his final season with Nittany Lions. I based my
prediction on his tremendous performance last season
and how impossible it would be to duplicate. Blackledge
ranks with Rich Lucas as the two best signal callers I've
seen perform at State.
Speaking of the Nittany Lions, Coach Rich Lorenzo’s
wrestling team has set a heap of records in romping
through the Eastern Wrestling League this season.
Nittany Lions have extended their dual meet win streak
in the EWL. Previous dual meet win skein was held by
Clarion at 14. Lions will be a big favorite in EWL tourney
this weekend at Clarion.
Over the next couple of weeks I've got to make a tough
decision in selecting pre-season All-East quarterback for
Athlon’s Eastern Football Magazine. It’s between West
Virginia’s Jeff Hostetler and Boston College’s Doug
Flutie Flutie. Both are superb field generals.

hoops and made good 10-

The loss dropped the
Dallas girls into a 5-1 tie
with the Lake-Lehman
girls. They must win their
games with Meyers on
Tuesday and Lake-
Lehman Friday while
Seton loses to Crestwood
to at least tie for the
second half title.
In Tuesday’s game with
Hanover, Dallas girls held
the Lady Hawks to only
three points in the first
half while scoring 43 to
take a 43-3 lead at half-
time.
Going into the fourth
quarter, the Lady Mounts
were in front 58-7 and out-
scored Hanover 21-10 in
the final stanza to win 79-
17.
