GAR ran off a string of

It’s Strictly My Opinion
Meyers defeating Lake-Lehman in wrestling last week
is a tribute to the superb feeder program the Mohawks
enjoy. Their young kids are receiving a lot of instruction
before they reach the varsity level.
I thought the media covering the Soup Bowl overdid the
bit about Skins Coach Joe Gibbs outcoaching Don Shula. I
thought it was simply a case of the champs overpowering
them in the trenches on both sides of the football.
It gets my dander up when I see and hear how
schoolboy athletes string along college recruiters. I'd
like to see the NCAA take even stronger steps regarding
recruiting practices. Some of the athletes get to thinking
they're pretty important. The parents make complete
jerks out of themselves, too.
Speaking of recruiting, Syracuse’s Gary Blaekney,
while coming up empty locally, is really a competent
recruiter. Best way to find out about a coach’s ability is
to talk with other coaches.
It’s always interesting to hear how Penn State reacts
when it gets turned down by a recruit. St. Joe lost a
couple of athletes this year because he had some
negative things to say about the other programs. Doesn’t
St. Joe know when you're on top of the heap you don’t
have to bad-mouth your foes?
According to early reports, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse,
Boston College and West Virginia are landing some top-
notch prospects.
Would you believe West Virginia is allegedly having its
prospects picked up by limousine and driven to the
airport. This supposedly is the practice in New Jersey
with several recruits. That’s getting too carried away.
‘Early reports indicate Notre Dame has made strong
inroads in the East this season.
This is a rare season of mediocrity for Coach Rodge
Bearde’s Lake-Lehman roundballers. I guarantee whol
the talent is developed, the Knights will be winners.
It’s annoyed me to hear how each coach that wins a
Soup Bowl over two seasons is described as a genius?
Scientists, yes; football coaches, no. Most scribes
belabor the word.
I’ve got a hunch there’s a split in the ranks of the 49’ers
about now. Bill Walsh, 1982’s ‘genius’, has canned
several of his coaches and labeled some of his players as
‘druggers’. It’s sort of strange that the ‘genius’ has not
accepted any of the blame for the collapse?
Several Cowboys fans still can’t believe the supposed
Soup Bowl team came up short for the third straight
time. What it tells me is they've got to sit back and
examine every aspect of the organization and its per-
sonnel. Especially when you consider on paper neither
the Eagles, 49’ers or Skins were supposed to stack up
talent-wise?
Dick Vermeil’s ‘burnout’ is simply a matter of his
inability to manage his preparation time and put his
priorities in proper perspective, claims one pretty
successful coaching pal of mine. I have to believe there
was more to it than was made public.
There are very few college roundball teams that can
afford to perform badly and win. Only those very
superior teams who are matched against a much inferior
opponent can afford a bad game any more. It’s amazing
the quality of talent around the country this season.
Penn State’s clobbering of Wilkes is an indication thajge
the Nittany Lions wrestling team is still tops in the A
PSU was ranked No. 1 in recent Eastern Mat Poll and
should remain there despite being tied by Navy recently.
Lions topped Syracuse and Lehigh which are ranked in
top slots in the poll.
