IT’S A JOB CRUSADE FOR OUR AREA When Hugh Ridall and Sheldon Wintermute held their First International Jazz Festivals in our area back in February of 1961 and, again, in February of 1952, they offered our area a vehicle that, if continued, would have brought our area millions of dollars worth of favorable publicity, and would have heralded our “True Life-Style" to the “Outside World” from whence our new industries and jobs are most apt to come. Unfortunately, our area “BLEW” its golden op- portunity to create a favorable climate for the attraction of new in- dustry. Instead, Newport, Rhode Island picked up on the idea and in the Summer of 1954 held their first Jazz Festival, which, sub- sequently, moved to New York City where it continues to be held. All of this favorable publicity could have been, and should have been, ours. In February, 1981, and again in February, 1982, Radio Station WYZZ sponsored week-long festivals in which jazz and big band events were held at various area hotels and night clubs every night of the week. College Misericordia even brought in the U.S Army Jazz Band for a one-night stand. These first two festivals have re-established the fact that our area held the first International Jazz Festivals. (Leonard Feather, noted jazz historian, attests to this fact). Our area has received thousands of dollars worth of good publicity nationally because of the restoration and revival of the original 1951 jazz festival idea. WYZZ and our area need your attendance at these events this February, 1983, to further carry the name and fame of our area to the “Outside World", to join in this job crusade, and to help our area get moving again. It's more than a Festival . . . It's A Job Crusade!!! o NEDT STUDENTS--Eight Dallas High School sophomore students have been named National Educa- tional Development Tests certificates winners.
