Wilkes-Barre Fats § Fisher’s new role yBY LEE L. RICHARDS Pitt boss Foge Fazio was in town last week visiting . with some prospects and I had an opportunity to visit with him and assistant Andy Urbanic. Coach Fazio told me about some of the priorities for spring drills. Obviously the main object will be to prepare a QB for next season. Two-time All-East safety Tom Flynn is the chief candi- ~ date right now. Flynn was an outstanding QB for Coach Urbanic when at Penn Hills. In fact, Flynn played his last : schoolboy contest here in 1980 when he led the underdog - West team to victory over the East in the Big 33 contest. Urbanic says, “Tom has a live arm. He can run the option, too.” ' Fazio said, ‘“We’ve already decided to make some changes in our offensive scheme by adding some type of option series. We've got some very capable people returning up front and we should be able to run the foot- ball more effectively.” . Pitt must come up with a solid group of recruits. High on the list is a punter and some burners at running back. They’ve had a bunch of A-A types visit and it’s just a matter ‘now on selling the players on the Panther program. CLIPBOARD NOTES: --Meanwhile, Crestwood’s Sam Elias informed me last week Matt LaVigna was notified he will be listed on two scholastic All-American teams. _. —Ican’t believe how 49ers Coach Bill Walsh has passed J the blame around for his team’s flop. What tickled me ~ was how last year at this time he was regrded the genius of pro football? Back in September, if you'll recall, I stated the 49ers wouldn’t repeat. My reason was too much luck last year and some suspect personnel. --Now that the Chargers failed again to reach the coveted Soup Bowl I'm curious to see if media will tag them with ‘can’t win the biggie’ label which Cowboys carried for years? --Right now I'd have to list Coach George Allen's Chicago team as the favorite in the USFL. He’s got some outstanding folks on offense already and inking LB Stan White, an Ohio Stater, will give instant stability to his de- fense. He’s got UCLA TE, Ohio St. running back, Grambling’s Truemain Johnson, best WR in college ranks, and QB Gregg Landry already in fold. That's a heap of fire-power. --Hottest name around pro ranks at present time is Cowboys’ John Mackovic. I also heard he has a lot of input into helping Army find a successor. He’s turned | down several head coaching posts in collegiate ranks, but i will be an NFL head coach shortly. 1 --Most of the coaches I've conversed with in recent weeks were unanimous in their praise of former Temple Coach Wayne Hardin. To a man they all believed Hardin took the Owls about as far as possible. I'll tell you what, Wayne's knowledge on the passing game is second to none in my book. . --It’s no accident that Coughlin’s roundball team is on : Q winning streak. Coach John Quinn has put a lot of time in _ developing the Crusaders. He’s a real worker in learning | a the ins-and-outs of the game. ® . Packer Coach Bart Starr is finally overcoming the sorry draft situation he was left with when Dandy Dan Devine left Green Bay. Starr is a winner and will have a contender from now on. --How negative can fans be? I had one Penn Stater tell me last week that Fran Fisher was forced to give up his broadcasts of Nittany Lion grid games? That’s simply ludicrous. Fran is second to St. Joe when it comes to popularity among the Lion faithful. He’s got a new post and will assist Jim Tarman in PR role. --Checking out the roundball teams, I doubt if you'll see Ralph Sampson and mates in the final four. Ditto for St. John’s Redmen. Big Apple press sure didn’t waste anytime giving Redmen a lofty ranking. Despite blowing a big halftime lead, Louisville will clip UCLA if two teams meet in the NCAA tourney. Watch the defending champs, North Carolina. The Heels are getting more consistent every time out. --Lake-Lehman Coach Shorty Hitchcock will get some positive things out of loss to Danville. Knights captured a biggie when they dropped Tunkhannock the night before. --Several readers asked me to explain what I mean when I refer to a team’s tendency? Anytime, a team does a particular thing over 75 percent of the time whether it’s running or passing the football in a given situation, that’s considered a tendency.
