    Wilkes-Barre Fats
BY LEE L. RICHARDS
nl choice forCollege Coach of the Year is Air Force
entor Ken Hatfield: Why? Simply because of the
restrictions the Academy has on recruiting and the
teams the Falcons defeated.
The Falcons first got my attention when they edged
BYU, 39-38. Then, two weeks after Notre Dame knocked
Pitt out of No. 1, a three touchdown underdog Air Force
team hammered the Fighting Irish behind the dazzling
running and passing of QB Marty Louthan, 30-17.
The Falcons were a ‘token choice’ for the Hall of Fame
Bowl so Vanderbilt could win. However, the Falcons won
that contest going away. I can appreciate the superb job
of preparation Coach Hatfield and his staff did with the
limited personnel they have to work with.
The Falcons wound up with a 9-4 slate much to the
surprise of the football world.
When I spoke of the USFL making the grade in pro
football, I didn’t anticipate the new loop signing two
quality ‘performers so quickly. Chicago inked Tim
Spencer of Ohio State, while Washington landed Craig
James of SMU. Both are stellar running backs. Look out
for the USFL.
--Coach Larry Schuler’s Dallas matmen gave Shorty
Hitchcock's Lake-Lehman squad all it could handle last
week. Mountaineers haven't topped the Black Knights
since around 1976. However, they have wrestled to two
ties during the span.
--Rodger Bearde is hoping to have two of his Black
Knight roundballers back in the starting lineup by the big
gt with Dallas on the 27th of this month. Chris Boyle is
Bearde hopes they can recharge their batteries and get
back in action as both supplied most of the scoring punch.
. —Coach Clarence Ozgo has his Dallas Mountaineers
doing all of the right things but the Big D lads are having
trouble getting the ball in the hoop. Dave Thomas has
been productive thus far. Once the Mountaineers esta-
blish some scoring consistency inside, look for them to
post some wins.
--While on the subject of roundball, Dallas grid coach
Ron Rybak has quietly established himself as one of the
better cage refs in the area.
--One of the more elated Penn State alumnis in the
Back Mountain has to be Jay May. I heard when he
returned ‘from the Sugar Bowl in the early morning
hours, he wasted little time in waking some of his friends
that rooted for the Dawgs.
--With the return of Bill Martin to the Yanks, I’ve
started a pool as to-how many weeks he'll last. Big
rush.
--Fran Fisher, the voice of Penn State football, has re-
tired from his broadcasting duties. Fran sure lent a lot of
style to Lion action and I for one will miss him. He finally
watch--Coach Rich Lorenzo’s PSU wrestlers perform.
--Notre Dame Coach Gerry (Farce) Faust made home
yisit to Crestwood star Matt LaVigna’s home Thursday
in an attempt to sell him on performing at Golden Dome
next season. Matt visited Boston College over the week-
end and is slated for South Bend this weekend.
--I didn’t shed any tears last week when Dick Vermeil
called it quits with the Eagles. I never took hankering to
him since he treated pals, John Mazur and Walter
Michaels so shabbily. Vermeil did get the most out of a
group of rather ordinary players. However, some of his
actions left a bad taste in a lot of NFL coaches’ mouths.
His running up some scores, the famous jersey incident
with the Cowboys and celebrating with champagne after
bowing to the Cowboys, but scoring enough points to gain
the home field advantage. With the emotional tears shed
by Len Tose, Jim Murray and Vermeil, it looked to me
like it was a marriage made in heaven.
--Couldn’t help but remember the story Jets’ Coach
Walter Michaels told me when he first went to Jets back
in late 1960s. Walter was handling the linebackers for the
Oakland Raiders at the time Weeb Euwbank called then
Coach Al Davis about hiring Michaels. Davis gave his
OK. The next day after accepting position with Jets,
Walter returned to his office to pick up his old Cleveland
Browns playbooks and other personal belongings only to
find Davis had changed the locks! Needless to say Davis
has never been too popular with Walter.
--Isn’t Citizens’ Voice Sports Staff overdoing it with this
bit about this area being St. Joe Paterno Country? If they
check the records closely over past 10 years it’s about 65-
35 of players going to Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, Boston
College, West Virginia, then comes Penn State. Sure
Nittany Lions have gotten their share, but they sure
haven't cornered the market as they'd lead you to
believe. I’m basing this from Allentown to Scranton.
